Good day. I'm posting to inform everyone that I'll be absent from Prospero for the next two weeks for the sake of legal research abroad. Wright will be accompanying me as well. It is my hope that this research should be of some use in determining what form of court would best suit a group consisting of so few people.

I extend my apologies to those who might have hoped to engage in recreation involving us, but business must always come before pleasure. Perhaps we can schedule something upon our return.

I doubt that two weeks will be enough to undermine my progress thus far, but your concern is noted. I should hope that Wright and I will be able to concentrate fully on our research uninterrupted.

That is true. Even though this place has the technology level of my world, I know it's not the same. I don't even know if the Dark Hour happens outside of Prospero.

Two things I want to ask you: When are you leaving and do you have any food allergies?

I suppose I'll have a chance to observe for myself.

The two of us will be leaving the day after tomorrow, and I have no such allergies.

I noticed your document explaining the circumstances here. Since our conversation concerning my investigation of the hotel, I've found out a small amount of additional information concerning the hotel which you could add to it.

[And he doesn't sound satisfied with the amount of it, either.]

You did? I was thinking that we have to explain the same thing to so many people, and a lot of times something gets left out. I thought having something like that might help. I'm glad people are using it.

What did you find? I'll put it in.

It took two months simply to discover that the hotel was purchased under the name "Trey Matre". A comparison with names related to religion and mythology showed that this was rather similar to "Tres Matres", a name given to the archetype of the triple goddess. Shortly thereafter, the former senator who is the mayor's father made a bizarre announcement.

No one is sure. However, the appearance of this strange new religion has acted as a catalyst. Several people have volunteered to investigate this "Church of Three", and a young man named Allen Ridgeley has gone to some effort to organize the overall investigation.

To do research in another country. Online research can only take one so far when one needs to examine a subject in depth, and the local library is only so great an improvement. I won't even get started on the instability of certain local bookstores.

I was asking why, actually. Try and remember, all I know about "law" comes from the laws of a time long since past. What's the research supposed to accomplish?

Quite simply, it's become painfully obvious that unless a court specific to us kidnappees is established, chaos and violence will continue to run rampant amongst us. I simply wish to make it possible for crimes which involve things that the natives are incapable of grasping to be properly tried. To that end, I wish to devise the best system possible for our circumstances.

Should I take that to mean the type of procedure you and Wright are used to, on a smaller scale, isn't going to work in this situation?

Most aspects should work as is, but I don't wish to rule out the possibility that we may have overlooked something. Furthermore, there's the question of what should or should not be brought to trial. It would be absurd under the circumstances to ban mutually consensual dueling, for example. A thorough look at law from around the world, as well as the history of law and its context, may remind us of other such details. There's also the question of punishment; aside from the rather expensive and conspicuous act of purchasing a building and renovating it into a prison, I'm rather short on practical ideas.

The problem of punishment aside, I'd say you're in for a hell of a challenge. You've got people from a variety of nations here, as well as the issue of "times". Different planets, too, if those gray kids aren't just playing at being strange. With that kind of gathering I can't help but think you're going to wind up insulting someone, however unintentionally.

All the more reason to take care to create a system that will work well enough in practice to be accepted despite what one might be used to.

Not that I'm expecting mixing them all together to work, but have you considered speaking with others here about the systems of justice they're used to?

Although the idea has occurred to me, I unfortunately suspect that among the results of simply making a public post on the subject would be the provocation of the more violently ambitious of our fellow kidnappees.

Still, that might not go so far as to help with some of the more... let's say esoteric backgrounds, here.
