- in the world is this thing?

[the video's turned on mid-sentence, making it apparent that the blonde, freckle-faced girl currently poking aimlessly at the screen of her phone has absolutely no idea how to work it]

Oh! I can see my face on it! Is it some sort of mirror? [tilts it a little, looking to the side, where a small green chameleon is perched on her shoulder] What do you think, Pascal?

[wait, what?! Have some extremely shaky video as Rapunzel drops the phone in shock, barely catches it before it his the ground, and manages to right it to peer at the screen, eyes widening as she sees someone else's face there now rather than her own]

Um... hello? [nervous smile.]

It's a communication device.

[eek! She looks around for the source of the voice, startled, then looks down at the phone and gasps, lifting it up to tilt it this way and that as if trying to figure it out all over again]

Wow... I didn't know there were things like this in the world...!

Apparently there are.

Wow...

[she wants to spend all day trying to figure out how it works, now, but she realizes suddenly that she's being sort of rude, and laughs a little]

Oh! I'm sorry. I'm Rapunzel, it's lovely to meet you! [bright, bright smile, though there's an edge of nervousness to it. This feels like a weird dream, really.]

It's alright. My name's Diarmuid, it's a pleasure to meet you as well. [He smiled, trying to put her a little more at ease.]

[okay good now they know each other and she can start asking all the questions]

Um, Diarmuid, can I ask you something? I'm not at all where I was a few minutes ago, and I'm just... kind of wondering how that happened! And where this... communication device came from! And what happened to Eugene...

Of course, I will answer everything to the best of my abilities. You are in a city known as Prospero, though unfortunately I really can't say for certain how any of us arrived to begin with. Everyone brought here seems to get a phone like yours--where exactly it comes from, I'm not sure. But it's yours all the same, and you can communicate with others here easily.

[she's quiet for a moment, thinking about this] Do you think we were brought here by... magic, or something? I mean, it was really, really sudden. I was standing by the boat and then I blinked and I was... here. With this... what did you call it? Phone? In my hand.

[she's just glad Pascal stayed on her shoulder. ;;]

Magic does seem to be the simplest explanation, though I couldn't even guess at the function or reasoning.

[she nods... and takes a deep breath. Now comes the question she's afraid to ask, afraid to hear the answer to.]

Do you know... if there's a way to go back?

...I'm sorry. We've not been able to find one yet.

[ She smiles at her ]

Are you all right? I didn't mean to startle you!

[ Then she notices Pascal ]

Aww... he's cute.

[she was afraid of that, and for a moment she looks... very, very wistful. She shakes it off quickly, though, and smiles warmly at Diarmuid]

Well, I suppose I'll have to make the best of it, then! Thank you very much for answering my questions.

That's a very good outlook to have. And I don't mind it at all--I have been here for quite a while, and I enjoy helping people who need it.

[Book characters, and now movie characters? This is getting kind of ridiculous. Still...]

It's a communication device. It lets you see or hear people who aren't right next to you.

[Suddenly, a tabby cat leaps up, trying to attack the delicious green chameleon behind the glass. Gratuity manages to hold her back.]

Pig, NO!

[that smile gets a little warmer, and the chameleon puffs up proudly. He likes compliments.]

He is, isn't he? And he knows it, too.

[and deep breath. This is really weird.] Um, so I guess... this thing is magic, huh?

Then you're a very kind person and I'm glad to have met you right away.

[she has to ask one more thing, though... because she doesn't like the thought of Eugene thinking she'd run away, or worse, and having to look for her in vain] How often are people brought here?

[ She's laughing ]

The phone? Not exactly, it's just technology.

Oh! [she's very startled, but the sight of the kitty quickly eclipses any panic she might be feeling over being talked to over some strange device, in a strange place, and she smiles]

He's a very handsome kitty. Is Pig his name, then?

Fairly often--I've not seen any particular pattern to it, but it isn't uncommon.

[Huh? "He"? Gratuity continues holding Pig back for a moment, eyebrow quirked in confusion.]

Oh! Pig's a girl! But yes, that is her name. Sorry, I think she wants to eat your chameleon...what's his name?

[She didn't actually watch the movie, plus she doesn't want to cause an existential crisis.]

Phone... [examining the strange thing curiously, sorry for the tilty video there >>]

Was it... technology that brought me here, too, then? [she just assumed it was all magic]
