When there's no Shadow, there's a gift: either something from the worlds we were in previously, or a clue. Clearly, these cards are the latter. The Velvet Room's attendants may be behind the other gifts, as well.

Enough about that. Does summer vacation really last this long here? What do you even do during this? People can't possibly go to the beach and eat strange fried food every day.

Well the school year in America actually starts in the fall, so that's usually in September but nowadays it's been bumped to mid to late August. Summer vacations usually the time to pick up a part time job if you're old enough, meet up with friends to do things together, and things like that.

Where I was before, summer vacation was only a few weeks, and there was something called summer homework to do in that time period, too. They don't even have that here.

America has pretty much the worst public school system in the world. Everyone knows that.

What makes it bad?

hehe, don't underestimate the amount of time someone can waste if they really put their mind to it.
besides, there's way more to do than just the beach and food.

What do you like to do?

most of my summer vacations were spent on movies or video games or pestering my friends online.
all of my friends were kind of long distance though.
so we couldn't really hang out or anything.
sometimes my dad would take me places.
but that usually wound up being more embarrassing than fun.

Oh. I suppose there are a lot of places to go here.

now that i think about it, i can do a lot of things this summer that i could never do back home!

What kinds of things do you want to do, then?

we could go hang out at the arcade.
and there's that karaoke place in town.
that's fun.
and i think there's a ferry to virginia beach!
they probably have all kinds of touristy stuff over there.

Somebody else wanted karaoke. Is it really that fun?

well, it's the kind of thing that's only really fun when you're with a bunch of friends.

...It will be more interesting than sitting around.

Well, in my world, it's because every worthwhile part of the country wound up underwater. Before that, because it was run by corrupt state politicians who refused to believe in things as simple as evolution and would rather spend all their money on military bases.

Hell, they made you pay to go to public university here.
