[Video]

[The video that comes on is excessively jostled about, mostly because Asch is just so utterly enraged that he can't hold onto his communicator properly. During this time, as he tries to get a hold of himself, the viewer gets a good look at what is definitely Luke's room, with the way the desk and the bed are a general mess, and the fact that there is a length of sheets trailing out the window, with no Luke present.]

DRECK!!!

[And that bellow is a damn good clue that Luke is in deep shit.]

YOU GET BACK HERE THIS INSTANT! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE STUDYING, YOU IDIOT! NOT JUMPING OUT WINDOWS!

[Natalia is forced to stare in bewilderment for a moment. This certainly brings the memories back - back to the days of trying to teach one fussy amnesiac noble the fonic alphabet and any number of other things which he refused to remember. But it never ended in quite this way... Sure, he had run off on occasion to play with Guy, and yes, she had yelled at him and thrown fits herself on occasion, but... on a relatively smaller scale than this.]

[--Oh nevermind. Natalia scowls down at her cellphone. Asch wanted to know if something bad happened? Well, this is bad.]

Asch! What is the meaning of this?

What have you done to Luke? [He hasn't hurt himself climbing out the window, has he?]

[alkjdfjw What? C'mon, Natalia, he's trying to be a good influence on the dreck and force him to study! What's so wrong with that?]

What...? This isn't my fault!

[Nothing, and she would have gladly offered her assistance. But the yelling is a little uncalled for.]

I didn't say that. [She looks disappointed.] I'm only asking why you felt it necessary to shout at him in such a way! We all heard you.

Because, yelling seems to be the only way anything penetrates his thick skull.

[Asch always yells when Luke does something stupid. It's a default response.]

And yet it doesn't seem to be working especially well. [If it was effective, Luke would be writing away in his notebook like a busy bee.]

[Natalia's focus trails back towards the window and she sighs. Here's a bit of advice, from one tutor to another.]

Luke has always hated studying. Unless you find a topic that interests him or manage to relate it back to something Luke has experienced, he'll resist the entire time.

How am I supposed to do that? The only thing that idiot likes is to hit things with a sharp object.

Must you continue speaking about him in such a way?

You know that isn't true, Asch - in the same way you do not only like to take your frustrations out on other people.

It's not my fault he's an idiot!

[But he doesn't want to get into an argument with Natalia of all people.]

Hmph... fine. What else does he do, other than whine?

[Asch is really making it seem as though he finds Luke to be an embarrassment. It's not difficult to pick up on this at all, since he keeps denying that anything Luke is or did is "his fault".]

I'm not saying that either of you is at fault, nor that anyone here is an idiot.

[What else does Luke do. Well...] Luke always looked forward to practicing the sword with Van, and he hated being confined to the manor. He's good at climbing trees and playing hide-and-seek, and sometimes he'll look off into the distance when he thinks no one is watching him. He doesn't like to be dirty, though, and if you force too much on him at once he'll complain.

I had quite a time convincing him that study was important. In the beginning he would always resist and say that I was being annoying.

[...] Then he'd try to sneak off to play with Guy.

[...so, it's basically what he said. The idiot isn't happy unless he's swinging a sword. Asch let out an exasperated noise, pinching the bridge of his nose.]

Well, I guess I can exchange sword practice for a chapters studied.

[It would give him an excuse to beat the hell out of the dreck too. That's to his advantage!]

Or perhaps the two of you could spend time together doing something else, something that doesn't require a great deal of thought.

[Though Natalia already suspects Asch isn't doing this because he wants to spend time with him...]

Actually, I'm quite surprised that you've taken such an interest in Luke's education, Asch.

How is the job quest coming along?

...the dreck doesn't think that much anyway.

[HE COULDN'T HELP THAT ONE, DON'T BE MAD, NATALIA.]

Of course I was going to take an interest. I can't have someone that looks like me going around acting like an idiot. Dealing with it on Auldrant is bad enough.

[He let out a sigh at that last one.]

Well, I guess. I've submitted a few applications. One woman seemed afraid to take anything from me though.

[Oh Asch, why must you make things so difficult. Natalia's mouth will twitch slightly at the remark, but she makes no comment.]

Is there no other reason besides that? [She feels very sorry for Luke. For both of them, honestly, but right now...] Well, I suppose it is true that Luke has a great deal left to learn. He has never been taught Ancient Ispanian either.

Hmm... [This doesn't seem like such a good start, now does it? Natalia watches the screen for a moment. Asch isn't precisely what one would call "friendly", and he rarely smiles, and he is a bit imposing - mostly because of the above reasons.] It may be that she was intimidated by your bearing.

[Asch let out a disgruntled noise, trying not to think about their Shadows and everything that had transpired there.]

W-what other reason would there be?!

[He grumbled, trying to force his voice to normal.]

A-and my bearing isn't that intimidating!

[She shakes her head lightly.] I'm sure I wouldn't know. Whatever the state of things between the two of you is a matter which only you and Luke would be privy to.

[Natalia tilts her head slightly to one side. Perhaps, but...]

Did you smile and thank her when you turned in your application?

[Asch let out a small noise; he took that as Natalia's little way of dropping that subject, which he was more than happy to do.]

Hn...? Why should I?

[...socially dense much, Asch?]

[Kindly.] To make a favorable impression, of course. To show that you're both friendly and easy to work with.

[~~Even when you aren't.~~]

[And there's a thump as his head hits the desk, making him slip out of view.]

This is going to be harder than I thought...

[[P.S. This claim is unsupported.]]

[It's a very good thing when Asch speaks. The thud was alarming, and for a second she'd wondered if he hadn't passed out.]

Smiling isn't especially difficult, and all the rest of it is common courtesy. I have no doubt you'll eventually succeed in securing a job.

Are you all right?

[Easy for her to say. He had gotten more used to ordering troops around than he thought, and he was considering too young in this world for a similar position. Who cared if he was eighteen, if he could lead people into battle without blinking? Geeze, this world was so messed up.]

Yeah, sure. I'm fine.

[...and he cuts the feed, because this is just embarrassing for him.]

[And then her screen goes blank.]

[--Oh.]

[Natalia can only take that to mean that he wants to be left alone for a while. But is that really best; and for how long?]

[Well. It's up to Asch, isn't it? In the meantime, she'll have to keep working hard and doing the best she can.]
