They're to celebrate getting older, for the most part. It's exciting when you're young, but eventually they simply get annoying.

Birthdays are a way to make someone feel special by focusing on them on the day they were born! It's a celebration.

I don't know what most people do for theirs. Mother always made me something nice for dinner and I'd bake a cake for us to share. ... And then there were the lights.

Yes! Every year on my birthday, there were these beautiful lights that would rise into the sky... they turned out to be paper lanterns, actually. I don't know why it happened on my birthday, but it definitely did make it... well, special!
