He had already had a hell of a time explaining why he had come home bruised, bloody, and with at least two cracked ribs.]

[Whatever. Didn't matter. So what if moving caused him agonizing pain, she hadn't asked him to move. He needed to stay exactly where he was and wait, as he had promised he would. Just a few minutes more and all of this would have been made worthwhile as soon as he saw her face.]

[Much later, Diarmuid finally made a video post; probably less than a good idea, because then everyone could see how scratched up, bruised, and bandaged his fight with Maiya had left him. But despite all that, he seemed...oddly content.]

I missed my birthday. Shame, really...I'd hoped to celebrate it for the first time in quite a while. That's alright, it is not as if I've never ignored this before. I wonder, does this make me twenty-six or does it not count for someone like me?

[He shrugged, then seemed to immediately regret it judging by how he winced in pain.]

Ah, one more thing--how well do healing spells work on broken bones? [Calm and casual as ever.] Even a little would help, it's actually very difficult to move as I am now.

Father and son. That was why I wanted Shirou to help me--he may well be the only one in Prospero that Kiritsugu would not kill if he stood in the way.

I admit I had no way of knowing that with absolute certainty and that was foolish on both our parts, but if there was even a chance of it we had to try.

How is it that you determined where Kiritsugu Emiya was likely to be?

I looked for him myself. He seemed the type to operate from a distance; as it turns out they make rifles for just such a combat style, and those are best used from a high vantage point. Therefore, I assumed he could be found on the rooftop of some particularly high building.

Indeed; they're known as sniper rifles. [Writing all this down before he goes on.]

For the record, could you describe how it is that you're already familiar with Kiritsugu? [Edgeworth sounds vaguely apologetic as he asks that question.]

He was Kayneth's adversary in the Fourth Holy Grail War, the Master of a Saber-class Servant. I did not know his name until his arrival in Prospero, but I was able to recognize him on sight after crossing paths with him twice in Fuyuki City.

(And to judge by our prior conversation, the possibility exists that Diarmuid might be painted as having a grudge against the man by the defense. I'll need to be prepared for that eventuality... assuming, of course, that we can find a defense attorney at all.)

[Edgeworth writes Diarmuid's words down somewhat more slowly, looking slightly melancholy.]

I'm merely considering the defense's potential arguments... provided, of course, that we can even find a defense at all.

What happens if we can't?

Then I fear that I may not be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt... or worse still, that I may cause the innocent to be convicted erroneously once more.

Hm. Well, we'll have to find a way around that little problem.

I wouldn't consider the problem "little". It wasn't merely my earlier methods that allowed me to go undefeated for four years -- in that time, I rarely encountered a defense attorney with the will and resourcefulness to even present so much as a challenge. Defense is arguably the most difficult job in the field of law to begin with, and we need not just any defense attorney, but one of the highest caliber.

I wasn't speaking literally. I can tell this is no minor issue.

Defending oneself in court isn't unheard of, though it's commonly said that he who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client.

...Somehow I can't picture Kiritsugu doing that.

I find it terribly disconcerting that in Wright's absence, the closest person to a defense attorney I can think of among us is a certain impulsive, overconfident, and hopelessly optimistic thirteen-year-old boy.

It was dark, I didn't get a very good look at her. She was about a foot shorter than me, with straight hair--probably black, not quite shoulder length.

I can definitely tell you she knew what she was doing. This was someone trained in martial arts at the very least, and almost matched my lance with just a knife.

Given the difference in reach between the two weapons, that's rather disconcerting.

Not to sound arrogant, but given my own skill in that area it's even more so. I had not expected a man like Kiritsugu to ally with anyone, but it makes sense that if he would they would be of considerable skill.

[Edgeworth hrms and pauses to write down Diarmuid's description of the woman.]

That will probably be a good idea. Obviously I'm not sure what exactly transpired between him and Kiritsugu.

Just try to go easy on him. I am sure this is all quite hard to accept.
