But what if you define a Hero as someone who selflessly continues to save everyone he meets, despite the suffering that he will endure as a consequence of that?

Then your view of Heroics is reliant on a single trait -- selflessness in the face of someone in need -- and naive besides. Even if a Hero attempts to save everyone who seems to need it, the chances of succeeding every time are slim.
