If someone says 'I forgive you'...how do you know they mean it? How is one supposed to realize whether that's spoken honestly or whether it's hiding a deeper resentment?

['Fionn said he forgave you, remember? He let that resentment build in his heart, and then he killed you. So how can I ever believe 'I forgive you'? How do we know it's true? And how are we supposed to know if we can ever be truly forgiven?']

I suppose you'd start by thinking about the person who says it. I'd believe it instantly from you, and have more doubts from a less honest person.
