[The following message is accompanied by a close-up image of a pair of round silver cufflinks with this design etched into them. They're apparently pinned to the end of a burgundy sleeve, and are small enough to make it unlikely that the design was hand-carved.]

While I can appreciate the craftsmanship of these cufflinks, I don't recall owning a pair like these. I have as little idea concerning how they came to be pinned to my suit as I do of how I came to be on this unfamiliar island. If anyone has seen a pair of silver cufflinks studded with a pair of half-carat garnets each or can shed light onto the origins of this pair, I would appreciate the lead.

A curious thing to focus on. Were I you, I would be more interested in learning about the unfamiliar place I am in than a replaced pair of cuff-links.

Whoever is responsible for my apparent kidnapping may also be responsible for switching out my cufflinks. If so, locating my original pair and discovering the motivation for placing these in their place may reveal much about the circumstances. If, by contrast, the events are unrelated, then clearly there are several cases at hand.

Good, if linear logic, for naturally you are missing much of the puzzle. You are not the only one who has been abducted and deposited here; I, myself, and quite a large number of others have as well.

A mass kidnapping? Over what sort of time period? Did all have a degree of local celebrity?

For the time period, I am not entirely sure; some have been here for several months already, while some have "appeared"--for lack of a better term-- only recently.

As for the locale-- there does not seem to be any sort of concrete pattern. This will be hard to accept, and sadly I cannot prove it myself, but if you were to ask the other victims of this kidnapping spree, you will find that many of us do not even come from the same worlds or time period. Where I am from, it was still the middle of the 18th century, and I was in my workshop in England. My er... partner, I suppose, hails from a land completely different from mine. He claims that there the walking dead and supernatural activities are common, which is most certainly not the case in London.

[She says that last bit with a complete tone of disdain and contempt. She'll believe it when she sees it, Klaus, honey, but she doesn't accept such wild claims without proof.]

No one has observed the perpetrators in action, despite the scale of the crime?

It had not escaped my notice that all displays of the date here are seven and a half years too slow. I had thought it an attempt at disorientation. However, that was not my question -- I was asking whether all those taken were well-known in their home region, as I'm a well-known prosecutor in my district and you introduced yourself as a countess.

[Whether he believes the time travel thing or not is something he's keeping to himself, it seems.]

Er... yes. I've been to London myself, albeit far more... recently, and certainly nothing of the sort was evident nor even asserted.

Ah, I see. I cannot say there has been, for though my partner was a baron from where he is from, I have seen ordinary people on this network just as often as those that claim significance.

For witnesses, I'm afraid I cannot help you. I did not observe them before or after the crime was committed, and did not think to ask.

[She does, however, nod smugly at the assertion, though her face falls as she remembers something that really rather undermines the whole point.]

Er... speaking of supernatural instances, if you have just arrived, then you would not know... It is not safe to walk around outside alone after midnight. The entire city seems to change for what feels like the span of an hour, though no time passes during the phenomenon. I would attempt to describe it, however, it may be better if you witness it yourself.

I see. To summarize, we appear to be the victims of a criminal enterprise spanning several months, with scant evidence and no witnesses, with apparently random victims with wildly incompatible claims as to their origins?

...I can see you are not convinced. I cannot say I blame you, for I would not have believed it myself. Truly, stay up until midnight and see for yourself. I suggest having someone with you who has been here awhile-- I will be sleeping. And I am quite certain death is not something you wish to risk on your investigation.

Most likely, however... if you are anything like the thorough investigator I presume you are, when you see it you will wish to look further. Do not go alone.

If it is truly so dangerous, why would the police be uninvolved?

It's a peculiar situation where only those that have been brought here are not ah... "transformed", I suppose is the best word.

I am truly reluctant to mention details. I'm sure I sound quite mad even bringing it up.

That is not the only aspect of this conversation that seems farfetched, Ms. Lovelace. However, I concede that it can do no harm to humor your suggestion.

Many people would focus their message on 'how did I get here?' rather than 'how did my outfit change cufflinks?'

The latter is one of rather few clues available from which to unravel the former.

To be fair, it is a concern to see a strange symbol. However, I don't think I've seen it before, so I have nothing to compare it to or reason to call it vaguely eldritch.

It wasn't the new cufflinks' design but the fact that my cufflinks were exchanged at all that I considered strange. However, since you've called attention to it, it occurs to me that perhaps their origins can be traced due to their unusual appearance.

[Just gonna ignore the "eldritch" comment...]

I can't imagine that the design is particularly common for cufflinks. Surely if the maker is located, things will become simpler.

That's true. It doesn't cover everything, but there are quite a number of us now who have been taken.
