[The following message is accompanied by a close-up image of a pair of round silver cufflinks with this design etched into them. They're apparently pinned to the end of a burgundy sleeve, and are small enough to make it unlikely that the design was hand-carved.]

While I can appreciate the craftsmanship of these cufflinks, I don't recall owning a pair like these. I have as little idea concerning how they came to be pinned to my suit as I do of how I came to be on this unfamiliar island. If anyone has seen a pair of silver cufflinks studded with a pair of half-carat garnets each or can shed light onto the origins of this pair, I would appreciate the lead.

The latter is one of rather few clues available from which to unravel the former.

To be fair, it is a concern to see a strange symbol. However, I don't think I've seen it before, so I have nothing to compare it to or reason to call it vaguely eldritch.

It wasn't the new cufflinks' design but the fact that my cufflinks were exchanged at all that I considered strange. However, since you've called attention to it, it occurs to me that perhaps their origins can be traced due to their unusual appearance.

[Just gonna ignore the "eldritch" comment...]

I can't imagine that the design is particularly common for cufflinks. Surely if the maker is located, things will become simpler.

That's true. It doesn't cover everything, but there are quite a number of us now who have been taken.

Do you have any estimate as to the scale of this crime, either in time or in victims?

I have personally been here for three months, and Diarmuid, who I know is one of the earliest victims, has been here for five months.

By all rights, it seems like a normal city during the day. Restaurants sell food, people can buy groceries, jobs can be acquired. The night is when things get strange.

The locals think nothing of the fact that strangers who make bizarre claims are appearing in their midst?

Appealing to them has done nothing so far. Their memories are suspect.

Can you provide evidence of their memories being where the fault lies?

For a period of about a week, strange disappearances, and reappearances as corpses on the shores, killed off most of this island's population. It was everywhere. Everyone was in panic, those kidnapped and the natural residents. There was not a person on this island who did not know what was going on.

When I returned from my untimely death during this incident (and I'll get to that later) not a one of the natural citizens remembered any of it, the disappearances or the bodies. Thus, I have reason to suspect that their memories are subject to tampering.

[The turnaround on this one is slightly longer than the time to read such a long message would account for alone.]

I requested evidence, not testimony. Can you prove that events of this nature occured at all?

I have widespread testimony, but nothing considered 'evidence' immediately on hand, no. Let me check back for old entries on this phone.

That's the most I have that's hard evidence. It's not something pleasant to record. In addition to that, almost all of the messages from that time frame mention something about the bodies.

In brief, as I investigate further, I should expect to hear two stories -- one consistent among the locals, the other consistent among the kidnappees?
