I guess the best way to describe what a Persona is it's a manifestation of our personality. They tend to take on forms of figures or creatures from mythology and folklore. Each other has their own strengths and weakness based on our personalities as well.

From what I can tell, it's a big part of who you are. There's quite a lot water-based mythological figures and creatures too.
