03: [Video, and I apologize for him]

[Hello, Prospero! This is a very disapproving and irritated Edgeworth with a display shelf full of various polearms behind him.]

In light of the results of a certain recent expedition, the general quality of the armaments I've observed among those who favor those that aren't firearms, and the length of the case thus far, I've been forced to conclude that either your collective observational skills could be reproduced by someone wearing headphones and a blindfold or your collective problem-solving skills are on par with those of cartoon villains.

As it seems that I must do your work for you, I spent today seeking out an arms dealer. As it only took me this long to discover this "Felix's Finds" which serves as the closest thing available, I would imagine that it would take someone unused to investigation roughly a week. Given that the kidnappings began in late June and no small number of us contend with murderous beings of an improbable nature on a regular basis, that the existence of this collector's shop isn't common knowledge begs explanation -- even should that explanation prove to further undermine my faith in humanity.

I unfortunately feel it necessary to clarify that he cannot afford to be open about his efforts to cater to our needs, and that his understanding of the situation is limited at best. As such, discretion is necessary in our dealings with him.

Yeah, most of us who've been around a while already know about the place. He does a surprisingly good job of craftsmanship -- or he knows places that do.

Damn lousy policy about repairs, though.

An obvious question presents itself, then: in light of the dangers of this place, why is this information not offered as freely as that about the local Shadow population?

The person gathering the information up could be more concerned with the enemies than with equipping themselves, could be the type to avoid fighting and it slipped their mind, could be the harmless air-headed type to not even think about it... There's a few possibilities.

I would prefer to avoid combat myself; really, I'm far more inclined to believe that the answers we seek are to be found by investigating that which is out of place here than by slaughtering mindless beasts. However, I cannot deny the possibility that necessary clues might be available only during the Dark Hour, to say nothing of the fact that some of those brought here are quite dangerous.

It takes all kinds. Frankly, it's probably good that people like you are around to be -- for lack of better terminology -- a full-time thinker.

Anyway, you're probably right that just killing Shadows won't be a simple way to solve everything, but I hope you're not trying to say the damn things are harmless.

From your tone and words it sounds like you don't approve of the business. Any particular reason why?

To put it simply, where I come from weapons have very little legitimate use. It is, in fact, my job to prosecute those accused of high crimes.

Sounds like you're native to this time and place, then. Not this place as in Prospero, but I think you get what I mean.

A time and place quite similar to this, yes. I was even able to obtain a job as a prosecutor here with little trouble.

[He pauses a moment, chuckling to himself before speaking thoughtfully.] I'll spare you the "What's a prosecutor?" conversation and look it up myself later on. If you haven't heard it already, I suspect it's the kind of question you'll receive more than once here.

Indeed, my first clue that things were as grossly amiss as they are was that Diarmuid asked that question of me.

Huh, you know Diarmuid? Makes explaining my circumstances easier, I suppose. Er, that is to say, what did he tell you, anyway?

Hmph. Something to do with magi in the modern era summoning "heroic spirits" to do battle on their behalf over the Holy Grail. [Obvious disdain is obvious.] That being said, his rather patchwork understanding of this time does lend just enough credibility to the tale to allow him the benefit of the doubt. (Barely.)

It'd be best not to doubt him. That guy would prefer to lose an arm, rather than lie to someone. Besides, there's quite a few others here who'd back his statements up as fact. Myself included.

Even with widespread testimony, the tale is difficult to fully believe with so little evidence to support it. That being said, under the circumstances I... cannot in good conscience dismiss it out of hand either.

[That last part sounded hard for him to say...]

I don't blame you, it's a bit of a fantastic tale. Well, on second thought, so is the situation about Prospero in general. Suppose that's why you're actually giving it an actual chance, then.

One of a few reasons, yes. Mere months ago -- from my own perspective, at least -- I would have walked away in the middle of a tale so, in your own words, fantastic.

What, you don't have the time to spare for a good story or two? That's some pretty boorish behavior, you know.

I would call an attempt to present a tale entirely detached from reality as the truth far more than merely boorish -- and previously, that is exactly what I would have assumed that particular sort of story to be.

Yeah, I guess you've got a point. Problem is that the truth ain't always what you think it is. Whether it's human interference or something outside the realm of humanity, there's always a twist. If anything, one should try to keep an open mind when they approach new things.

[Well, that hits home. As familiar as it sounds, it's more inclusive than any way he's said things like that.]

You are, of course, correct. I've seen such things happen time and again in court -- at least, those things that fall within the realm of human possibility. To see proof of anything outside of the realm of man and nature, to in fact wield such things... that is new to me. I am still attempting to move past my reasons to deny them.

[Some jerk Edgeworth might be talking to right now. Though, he seems put into a good humor by the prosecutor's words.]

That's half the battle right there. Some people don't even try, and stick with whatever world-views they're used to. Awfully boring way to live, not bothering to sample all that you can, abstract and physical things alike.

[That comment seems to cheer the prosecutor up slightly.]

It would not be the first time I've had to adjust my course to one closer to the truth, all told.

Oh? Sounds like you're used to such a thing, then. Well, used to the act of shifting belief or whatever you'd want to call it anyway.
