[Hello, Prospero! This is a very disapproving and irritated Edgeworth with a display shelf full of various polearms behind him.]

In light of the results of a certain recent expedition, the general quality of the armaments I've observed among those who favor those that aren't firearms, and the length of the case thus far, I've been forced to conclude that either your collective observational skills could be reproduced by someone wearing headphones and a blindfold or your collective problem-solving skills are on par with those of cartoon villains.

As it seems that I must do your work for you, I spent today seeking out an arms dealer. As it only took me this long to discover this "Felix's Finds" which serves as the closest thing available, I would imagine that it would take someone unused to investigation roughly a week. Given that the kidnappings began in late June and no small number of us contend with murderous beings of an improbable nature on a regular basis, that the existence of this collector's shop isn't common knowledge begs explanation -- even should that explanation prove to further undermine my faith in humanity.

I unfortunately feel it necessary to clarify that he cannot afford to be open about his efforts to cater to our needs, and that his understanding of the situation is limited at best. As such, discretion is necessary in our dealings with him.

[Edgeworth nods grimly. What he's imagining isn't quite in line with the severity of what John went through, but it's enough for him to gain some newfound respect for the boy.]

No child should have to go through such a thing. I'm surprised, however, that you didn't learn more caution from the experience.

There wasn't really time to learn much from the experience. And if I'd been too cautious, I wouldn't have survived.

[He wonders now how his friends are doing without him. It's not like they needed him or anything. They were all way stronger. But he doesn't want them to worry about him either.]

It is true that both caution and boldness are necessary to success, lest recklessness or cowardice reign.

[That thoughtful look doesn't escape Edgeworth, but he doesn't press, assuming whatever is on the youth's mind to be a painful and personal matter not relevant to moving forward in the here and now.]

Hehehe... I guess that's true. Going too far in either direction is never good.

I guess I was just always better at the boldness than the caution.

That much is apparent. At least you now know to work on it.

And you can work on the other one! And maybe join us the next time we go to the dungeon.

You might be surprised at the degree to which I've already had to do so. That being said, given that so many are being made to suffer at such tender ages, it would seem that the time has come for more. I'll need to learn the basics of a weapon first, however; at the moment, my Persona can only reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the enemy, not attack.

That's an awesome power though! You just need to bring some people with you who can fight. You'd level up in no time.

I should still take the time to learn the rudiments of a weapon even in such a case. If I have some chance of holding off an attacker until a better warrior can eliminate it, I would be less of a burden.

Yeah, I guess you can't be too prepared. So what kinda weapon are you going to learn?

Something of the melee variety. It would give me something to parry with, to say nothing of the fact that I'd rather have as much control as possible over my weapon's movements.

[Because, y'know. Bad history with projectiles.]

Beyond that, it depends in part on what training options become available.

Swords are indeed worthy of serious consideration. There is, after all, good reason that they remained popular for millennia.

Well, yeah! For starters, they look really cool.

...While many are indeed pleasing to the eye, I don't believe that was one of the deciding factors.

Are you sure about that? If you look at movies and books and stuff, if they aren't using modern weapons, isn't the coolest guy always the one with the sword?

OBJECTION!

I can think of series in which a spear-user was the superior character.

So what show is it? If it's that good, I totally have to see it.

Unfortunately, it has yet to begin production -- if it even will in this place, as I can find no evidence that the television studio that produced it exists in this world despite the fact that it was founded long before 2011 in my own.

Regardless, should you be so fortunate as to somehow gain access to it, it is... (Steel yourself, Miles. Proceed as though you were merely making a recommendation to someone in the show's intended target audience.) ...the Steel Samurai franchise. The first series is simply called "The Steel Samurai: Warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo".

[Being 13, John actually is within the show's target audience. And would probably watch it anyway.]

Sounds awesome! Sucks that they don't have it here. I'd love to see it!

It is remarkably so, yes. It was produced by a studio with a long history of producing samurai movies aimed at older audiences, and both the studio's stars and new talent lent quite a bit of pathos to the overall tale. What could not be said directly in a children's show was often implied to great effect.
