He was a man who inherited his father's mercenary company and became the leader of the liberation army that restored a princess to her throne. He had no interest in politics, but did what he felt was right and led his men as though they were all in that same mercenary company, living together as brothers.

I'd have to say a gun's your best choice. Can't let someone get to close to you if you have one--or a crossbow, if you're used to that.

Crossbows have the benefit of existing on my world, but I am just as unskilled with them.

If you could get your hands on one, I wouldn't mind teaching you.

I've got a standard handgun right now if you really want to learn, though. [Better than just handing someone a weapon and watching them shoot themself in the foot.]
