[Well, its been a hard week of thinking, but Miki's finally been released from prison she doesn't know how her... mother? (that doesn't seem quite right to Miki, but Saori was her mother, wasn't she? Whatever.) She didn't know how her mother was able to come up with the money, but she really owed her this time.]

All of you punks better get ready to straighten up, since I'm no longer in prison and I don't want any of you ending up there.

So you better go to school or I'm going to hunt you down.

[She begins to sound a bit more embarrassed.]

A...also to everyone who I trained last week, I'm sorry if I hurt you. I'll take it a bit easier next time.

You haven't the right to make such decisions on behalf of others! While the need may well be pressing, it doesn't excuse criminal behavior -- or would you rather allow those with ill intent to use a defense such as yours as an excuse?

So we should just allow people to do what they want? If people are allowed to not take responsibility to fight the shadows, whatever is causing them is going to win.

If they fail to see the necessity of undergoing training before endangering themselves, then the proper course of action is to convince them of either the need to be prepared or the importance of staying out of harm's way.

You convince them by showing them that they are too weak to survive training.

I'll make sure not to endanger the regular people here, but we can't let anyone drag down our efforts.

Of course I've learned something, and I'll think about more about how I conduct our training. You even said the law is unable to deal with our battle against the shadows, and while I was on the inside I did a lot of thinking. I used to think that following all of society's rules was the only way to protect people, but in this case it's preventing us from being prepared.

I thought about Hell's Bunny a lot while I was bored in my cell. I always wondered why she was my favorite character even though she was the bad guy, and I realized, she's fighting against a system that can't handle her situation, that keeps her from protecting those who she cares about. That's what's going on here. I feel that my devotion to following every law was misguided, and we are going to have to bend it wherever we can in order to defeat these things.

Then you've taken the wrong lesson from the situation. Has it not even occured to you that assaulting people is considered a crime for a reason, or indeed that you might possibly have done something wrong at all?!

[Realizing the need to go into some detail best not made public if he's to dissuade Miki, Edgeworth changes over to a private call.]

I know what it is to hold the mistaken impression that the ends justify the means, Miss Onimaru. I undoubtedly made mistakes that lead to wrongful executions in the days when I thought in such a way. In the end, it turned out that I was operating under a mistaken impression as to what the proper ends were. That is one of the many risks of such vigilantism.

You've fallen victim to another such fallacy -- you mistakenly believe that your means is the only possible path to the end that must be accomplished. Laws exist for a reason, Miss Onimaru: they outline what means are almost universally the wrong ones to any given end. If any legal alternative whatsoever can be pursued, no matter how slim the chance might appear, that is the path to tread. To do otherwise is to endanger all of society.

That's what I used to think, Mr. Edgeworth. That the laws of society are always right. But I've talked to a lot of people here who don't agree with that. That Robin Hood guy, for one. Y'know, maybe it's too naive to believe so much in the system. Especially one that put me in jail and charges me thousand of dollars for a simple mistake. There were better ways than mine, and I accept that I have to listen to others and their opinions a bit more. But I don't think that the laws are the only way that need to be followed anymore.

And you had people killed? How did they punish you? Why do you expect me to trust in a system that lets someone who committed such evil continue to act as one of their officers?

It would be hypocritical of me not to acknowledge the concept of the method of last resort. However, there is a difference between being left with no choices and merely presuming you know better than the rest of society what the best approach is.

[That last bit? That provokes a wince and stirs up a memory that makes him shudder:

...I was never found out. Furthermore, once I realized the error of my ways, I... never reexamined any of my old cases. I wish that I could say that my reason for wishing to retain my job was as noble as a desire to do it correctly in order to atone for having done it wrong for so long, yet...

So you will allow the people you kiled to go without justice because you want to protect yourself? And you're saying I'm in the wrong here because I want to bend some rules to make sure we are ready to fight a great evil? You're just hiding behind the system because you don't have the courage to take responsibility your own mistakes!

[Edgeworth is silent for some time after that angry accusation, resting his head on his free hand.]

I don't pretend that the system was responsible for my own wrongdoings, Miss Onimaru. They were indeed my own. I...

(...Think, Miles! What is the truth behind my behavior?! Am I in fact so selfish?)

[Edgeworth gasps lightly at the newly-familiar voice in his mind, one as prone to slicing through nonsense as he. His head snaps up at the same time, though his grey eyes look distant at first.

He knows what he considered instead during that year away, what he would have done if there was no rightful place for a prosecutor in the world.]

I... suppose, however, that being part of the justice system is more than just my vocation. It... um. I'm... not certain that this will make sense, but, er... I... could live no other way. (I must sound foolish.)

I don't blame anyone or anything for what I did either. It was because I didn't think, that I acted, and because of my own stupidity I've ruined my entire life! You think because it will inconvenience your life its ok that you had people murdered by the system you want me to believe in?? And that it's ok because you blame yourself! That' not responsible! That not even- Its- ITS ARGH

[A loud clank is hear off screen as Miki kicks a metal pol out of frustration.]

You want people to not act out of the system but you think you're too good to accept its punishments either! How is that any different!

I don't consider myself above the law. But to lose my place in it... would be no mere inconvenience. I've questioned the worth of my life if I have no rightful place within the justice system, Miss Onimaru.

But you consider your life above the justice for all you've killed. Do you really respect the justice system, or are you just a coward?

...I have no answer for that question.
