I prefer to read as my solitary activity, but I am aware that I should probably get out more, as much as it's against my nature.

We are similar in that respect. What friends I've had, I gained through happenstance, not any inclination towards gregariousness.

Ah, yes. Reading is so much a part of both business and pleasure for me that it seemed too fundamental to be worthy of mention.

Mm, yes, the twentieth century saw a great deal of decline in respect for the written word. That being said, the other media which rose to prominence in that era possess their own merits.

I am quite impressed by the speed at which news travels in this time period. It's remarkable to me, when the technology I'm used to is best termed 'vaguely medieval'.

Speed is most certainly a benefit worthy of note, although haste combined with mankind's taste for rumors can make a flaw of it as well. The Internet in particular introduced other vital qualities, ones whose full impact on society are still coming to be understood even in my own time -- the ability for anyone to be heard, as well as to assemble regardless of distance.

The phone system here is incredibly useful as well, particularly when one is in distress. I doubt we would function nearly so well as a group without it.

I daresay that we still don't function particularly well as a group even with it -- but yes, without it we would almost certainly be helpless rather than merely woefully disorganized.

Give them time. Patience, I'm learning, is a virtue.

It is easy to be patient now that a near-tragedy has spurred many of us to action -- myself included.
