Now that they're together here, he wants her to know that he still cares, but he's too afraid to let her know its him. It would be too cruel, considering he knows what will happen in the future.

[She considers for a long moment.] But what of her feelings? I understand that your friend is concerned for her well-being, however there is a possibility that she might return his affections. Would it not be even more painful for them to remain separated in such a situation?

Still, if he cared about her, then they must have had some sort of history together. Perhaps, if he doesn't wish to speak to her about these things directly, he could let her know in some other way.

Nothing elaborate, of course. There are always anonymous letters and things of that manner, but taking action would have more of an impact.

Even if he wishes to remain aloof, he must begin to make the effort himself! Whether or not he has a way with words, there are still things he might do.

For example, if he knows her well, he might find some way to help her achieve her lifelong goals. Or perhaps he could help her out of a hardship or protect her from danger, or he could teach her things she doesn't yet understand.

He won't make any progress so long as he has others do all of the work in his stead.

[Natalia exhales quietly, her irritation with Luke having subsided for the moment. She turns her full attention back to the cell phone, now that she's finished her speech.]
