Cats, Books, and Noodles

[Thanks to the, uhh, "generosity", of Gilgamesh, Miki has finally found some employment. However, sitting behind a register at a bookstore late at night, no matter how ridiculous and golden that register may be, isn't really her idea of fun. The books do nothing for her either, as books are also rather boring to her. After two dull nights and desperate for some excitement in her life, as her injuries have made constant nightly shadow hunts unwise, Miki has decided to throw herself into her second passion which has seen little use since her arrival at Prospero: getting people to visit her store.]

Video, sometime around 8PM Friday.

[Miki's phone is propped up against a pole in such a way that the viewing angle shows both her and Gil's bookstore in full behind her. Smiling, Miki begins speaking loudly and cheerfully as she makes exaggerated gestures towards the bookstore.]

Hey! Are you bored? Do you like reading books? Do you like coffee? Do you like cute things with cat ears? Well now you can have all of them at The Bookstore! Come on down to the Kitty Cafe inside and we'll make sure you'll have the best time you ever had inside a bookstore! T-this definitely means you too Lion! Nyan~

[Miki brings her arm up to her face in an imitation of the Maneki Neko pose before she runs up to the phone and shuts off the feed.]

Action - The bookstore

[The inside of Gil's bookstore is now filled with about two dozen stray cats that Miki has headed in off of the streets. Most of them lounge about in the way that cats are wont to do, with dispositions ranging from affectionate to disinterest. None of them look overly sick or diseased or infested, Miki did screen these cats personally, at least. Miki herself is running around, wearing her normal clothes and completely absent any sort of superfluous ears, handing out coffee in cardboard cups to the few bewildered customers inside. She has a few bandages on her hands and face, as well as a few minor red scratches.]

[Miki approaches lance, her first statement is made in a teasing, yet friendly, tone.]

Oh, you're a champion of counting too. I wanted to bring in more customers and cats are a lot more fun than books, so i found a few and brought them inside. Can I get you anything?

You imply I spent the time to count each and every one of 'em.

[He grins, reaching to pat the critter on his shoulder]

You still actually sell books here, or is it just cats?

We do, if you want to buy them for some reason. We might even have some "how to count" books if you do need help with that.

Stuff on arithmetic can wait [~~until never~~.] I was thinking more along the lines of recent history.

Oh, well there are some history book over there. I think they are all about ancient Iraq or something though.

[Son of a bitch this was Gilgamesh's store, after all. He should have expected something like that.]

Tell me you're kiddin'.

Yeah, Pretty much all the books are about that, some kind who lived back then, money and power. I have seen people buying other things, so I'm sure you could find what you were looking if you look and dig around behind the other books, but I've never really cared to try.

It'll never cease to amaze me how much your boss absolutely loves himself.

You don't have a list of the stuff you've got here, somewhere?

Maybe. The boss never told me anything about this place, just show up and don't cause him trouble.

Sounds like a good bunch of rules to me. He'll find his own trouble.

[A beat.]

So I'm either on my own, or I play with cats 'till someone who might know shows up?

There was some other blue haired guy who was here earlier who said he worked her too but I haven't seen him again. Though if you really want to buy something I can get you some coffee or tea.

...Hell, why not. I've got nothing else to do today. Coffee, if you don't mind.

No problem!

[Miki shortly returns with a cardboard cup filled with coffee.]

So, do you know the guy who runs this place well? Or just had bad experiences with him since you arrived?

How to put it... We come from the same place -- never really talked much, but it turned out we worked for the same person. The rest is complicated trash I don't feel like remembering. Let's leave it at "we don't get along."

[He's honestly not bitter or any-such, just saying the facts in a super-condensed version.]

He's not exactly the easiest person to get along with.

Especially when he calls people mongrels.

And he does that just about all the time. To customers too, I'll bet.

[He grins wolfishly, taking a sip of the coffee.]

If I'm to be blunt, he's either the most, or the second-most dislikeable person I can think of offhand.

He does, though he hasn't called me one since I beat him up over it. It's made working here a lot more pleasant.

Wait, you...?

[This is Lancer. This is Lancer laughing loudly and unreservedly. You may get the impression he'd give Miki a hearty pat on the back if that thing about her being crazy-injured wasn't broadcast to everyone a while ago.]

I like your style, little lady.

[Miki beams with pride.]

It was the weirdest fight I've even been in. He took maybe two swings at me but he kept trying to ask me questions, so I just kept hitting him.

What? Well, that's boring of him. You even remember what was so important he had to keep asking it?

[Tact: Not saying that it's probably a good thing he didn't fight back.]

He screamed "Do you think you can beat me?" and "Are you stupid?" a lot and he also talked about he was some unbeatable hero from the past.

If he was they had pretty crappy heroes in the past.

Some of 'em are pretty terrible if they're without whatever weapons they're accustomed to, apparently.

Odd that he didn't even struggle a bit. Figured he'd have more fight in him.

I could have taken him anyway. I was happy enough to get the rage of him calling me a mongrel out of my system, even if he did never apologize.

Give him time, he'll switch to personal insults eventually.

[Come to think of it, he still owes Gil a beating for that 'dog' comment... Maybe later.]

Gotta admit, I'm wondering why you're even working for the guy.

He was the only person around here willing to hire me. A lot of places won't even talk to you if you tell them you were in jail.
