[Suddenly, a video feed clicks on. The image is blurry and moving sporadically: this video is clearly accidental.]

[The image stabilizes somewhat. It reveals itself to be the face of an older man with absolutely ridiculous hair, looking very Perplexed but altogether Intrigued.]

Interesting. I assume this is some manner of recording or communication device, then. And if you press --

[The feed clicks off suddenly, and then returns a few seconds later.]

-- relatively simple, all things considered. If only the buttons weren't so deucedly small... but it will have to do.

I am Baron Klaus Wulfenbach and, if anyone is listening, I would like some answers. A cursory investigation of this place has made it painfully obvious that I am very, very far from my homeland and, it appears, my place in relative space-time. I would like an explanation from someone more familiar with this universe as to where I am, when I am and, perhaps, the general history of this city. It is discomfiting enough to be removed from one's home when one is in the middle of attempting to stop a war; it is far worse to be removed to somewhere that one knows nothing about. Thus, I require information, if you please, and quickly.

I suppose I had better. It may prove enlightening, at the very least. Many of my questions have been answered, but I suspect that it will be quite some time until all of them are. A gathering and pooling of knowledge may make significant headway, however.

I confess, I am somewhat eager to est my ability to, as you say, perceive Shadows. I have not even been here a full day, and thus have not yet experienced your particular midnight.

... I suppose I should invest in a weapon first, if what the young woman I was talking to previously said about them being likely to swarm is true.

A wise decision. There are some serviceable autopistols and blades available, if you check certain stores, but longarms and truly elaborate weapons, or armor, for that matter, are entirely unheard of. This is a place of laws and peace. Up until recently there hadn't even been a murder here.

Hm. How unusual. Though perhaps I am merely cynical from years in the most war-obsessed country on earth. A pistol of any sort will be perfectly serviceable for the time being; I may be able to modify it to my specifications, if I can get my hands on some decent metal and tools. But imagine those are also difficult to come by here?

I quite agree, I have never heard of such a society before. As far as metal and tools, there are many abandoned buildings in the business district, much scrap and older tools can be found there. [ ANd thus garviel tips Klaus off about the perfect place for a mad scientist's lair. ]
