Kaiji can't help it anymore. He's tried avoiding the casino, dealing with this whole weird situation first than worrying about his impending debt. But he can't resist it any longer. He has to go. He must!
After all, as far as he's concerned, this new situation hasn't affected his old one. He's still under the yakuza's thumb, deep in debt and on a temporary leave of absence in his life of slave labor in an underground construction site. He need to win enough money to get himself out, and the five men who helped him get this leave in the first place - 60 million yen, or about $800,000. However, when he was in Tokyo in April. And when he woke up in Propsero, it was August. People have been talking in this town about different times and dimensions, maybe this was one of the affects. This was his year, but... what if that's not his Tokyo out there? What if back in his real home, he's simply gone forever? No one would notice he was gone, except his debtors and his fellow prisoners. Otherwise it was like he would have never existed at all...
No, he couldn't risk it. He couldn't live with himself if he let the guys down. They were counting on him. Their very futures were riding on whether he could do this, along with Kaiji's. He wasn't about to miss this opportunity.
Today, with the money he showed up with in Prospero and a few tips from his new job - about $1100 - Kaiji heads into Golden Heaven. He looks tense as he wanders around. He's got a lot of money he needs to win. He needs to gamble. What surprises him is the amount of normal townsfolk here, gambling away their household possessions, cars, jewelry... It was a little off-putting, but he wasn't interested in items. He needed money. He has to turn $1100 into $800,000. His fellow prisoners were counting on him, and had absolute faith in him. He could do this.
Kaiji will be hitting up small tables to start - a few hands of poker, or a few mid-range slot machines. But mostly, he's scoping the place out. He's looking for a game where he can score big - and something that would no doubt be shady. Feel free to stop to talk, or play a few hands with him, or maybe make him an offer he can't refuse...

No. It is. Gilgamesh himself said these two machines will bring tremendous luck. Take heart in my broth--[ The slot machine starts ringing loudly, as it suddenly belches out high-worth chips. Apparently he hit the jackpot! ]

What?! You-- You just hit the jackpot on that thing!
