32: Everyone has moments they're not proud of [Video]
I might as well pull the bandaid then. I was going to ask more about that dream of the Vel--
[The video feed turns to static.]
[A little girl around eight years old rushed out of her school, after the daily clean up duties, to the train station. A better look at her and it’s actually Saori, wide eyed and with hair tied in pig tails. She zipped through the foot traffic, impatiently waiting for the lights to change at intersections. Sure enough, she arrived at the stations, just short of the turnstyles.
[“Papa’s train should be coming any minute!” she chirped to herself out loud. A train did arrive, dropping off a large wave of people coming home from work, but none of them were her father. “He must be on the next one, “ she reassured herself. Ten minutes became thirty and then an hour and then two. Her shoulders became sore from her backpack, but she stood her ground.
[Just then one of the local station workers passed by. “Saori-chan, your father’s not back yet?”
[She clenched the hem of her dress as she quietly nodded. “Maybe Papa doesn't want to come home,” she choked back tears. Alarmed, the worker called the police and took her to nearest police box.]
[The feed goes static-y again to cut to another memory.]
[Years later, Saori sat on a tatami mat, facing two men who sat opposite of her. The first one was younger, his green hair tied back in a braid and his bangs obscuring his right eye. His shirt and detached sleeves were cream colored with a pale green smoke pattern on them. The other was much older, his white hair kept plain and long. His garb was the much more traditional kimono and hakama.
[The older man smiled gently. “So, Saori, how is your stay in Kuukan so far? Are you enjoying it?”
[Saori gave him a polite bow. “Yes, Inari-sama, I am. I owe both you and Tenjou a great debt. Also thank you for going out of your way to check on me when you have such a busy schedule. There is something I’d like to talk to you about.” Tenjou, the younger man, raised an eyebrow but said nothing. “I’d like to...join the corps if that’s--”
[“Out of the question,” Tenjou cut her off, standing up. “I won’t accept her being part of it. You don’t have to fight, Saori. Why not use your time here to do things you couldn’t do when you’re alive?”
[Inari raised his hand to silence his son and chuckled. “I beg to differ, son. I think she’ll make a good asset to the corp. Pluto has told me she’s a fast learner and has a lot of spirit.”
[“Besides,” Saori added. “After learning what the corps does, I don’t want anyone to suffer like how I did. You said so yourself that there’s no such thing as coincidence. Maybe I died early so I could help out. Please, Tenjou, consider me.” She bowed humbly.
[Tenjou looked at her quietly. “After all that trauma, she wants to do that. Her soul’s got more strength than I thought.” he pondered to himself. He finally let out a sigh.”Alright, if you could get approved by both Father and Pluto, guess I don’t have a much of a choice.”
[Saori looked up and smiled. “Thank you, Tenjou.” He flinched slightly, and there was a slight tint of red on his cheeks. Once he regained his composure, he gave a nod of acknowledgement and excused himself.
[It seems the feed wants to spill everything about her and goes to the next one.]
[In the lobby of an abandoned high rise, Saori was with Tenjou. In front of them, there was a Nue the size of a large truck. Both sides and the surrounding battlefield were heavily injured but still standing.
[A low laugh came from it’s monkey head. “I haven’t had a fun fight like this in ages. Too bad it’s gonna end soon. That girl turned out to be the most interesting.” A high pitched laugh came from behind the Nue. His snake headed-tail slithered around.
[“That’s right. It’s been sometime since we dealt with someone with such an interesting scent. Even more, I think she resembles that last one. The scent’s pretty close too.I remember he kept begging to spare him and he had kids.”
[Saori lifted her head and Nue laughed. “Like hell we’re gonna listen to some crybaby human. He was such a delicious soul too!”
[“You bastard,” Tenjou gritted his teeth. “So you were behind the string of spirited away cases in Kansai at the time. I’ll be damned if you escape here ali--”
[Suddenly the Nue was blasted back and he roared out in pain. Saori was right in front of him. A chill went up Tenjou’s spine as the battlefield suddenly felt cold. He called out to her but her name fell on deaf ears. She opened a flask attached to her hip. Plumes of smoke escaped.
[“After all these years...you....I’ll never forgive you.” The smoke suddenly transformed to large stakes and plunged into the limbs of the Nue, pinning it to the wall. Saori jumped up to the level of its eyes. “May Enma and the gods of judgement give you the worst.” With one punch between the eyes, blood gushed out from the impact. The creature in its rage and pain, lashed out with its tail in a final assault, sending Saori back.
[Tenjou leapt up and swept her into his arms. She wasn’t injured but he still held onto her tightly. “Saori, what the hell were you--”
[“--I couldn’t save him,” her voice cracked. “I couldn’t even save my own family. He’s gone forever. Papa’s--!” Her words dissolved into tears as she cried loudly into his chest. Tenjou didn’t say a word and just held onto her. ]
[It finally cuts to one last memory.]
[A year later, Saori was alone with Inari. The two were sharing a bottle of sake while looking at the garden.
[“As always my dear, thank you for your hard work,” he praised her. “There is another reason why I called just you here.” Saori blinked and tilted her head.
[“As you know I’m getting old, even for a god. Even we are subject to the rules of reincarnation. Soon, Tenjou will take my place but he’s going to need help.”
[“Of course, Inari-sama, the others and I will be there to support him then. Unless...that’s not exactly what you had in mind.” She couldn’t help but wonder what the god was going for.
[He gave a nod, confirming her thoughts. “Yes and no. The name of the gods are a legacy title. While a single person can inherit it, if two ‘soul mates’ take it, they can unlock more potential powers.”
[“Soul mates...you mean if two souls became married, bonding them for all eternity. You can’t possibly mean...” Her cheeks flared up red. Inari calmly nodded.
[“I’ve seen how the two of you interact and Ami and Shigure can vouch for me as well. Both you and my son complement each other very well. Plus you have many qualities that make you a strong candidate to carry on Inari’s name.”
[Saori put down her sake cup and closed her eyes in contemplation. It’s true she did have feelings for him that developed over the years but marriage?
[“I...accept but I do have a condition. I want to wait until he asks me. If he’s not ready to confront his feelings, then he is not ready for marriage and inheriting the title of Inari. Is...that alright for you?”
[Inari stared at her in disbelief but laughed. “I expected this sort of answer from you. You’ll make a wonderful Inari, Saori. Very well, I accept these conditions. It’s only proper now we celebrate with one more drink.” He brought back her sake cup and poured her another.]
Four different sets of memories... That was a bit over-excessive. Maybe we can discuss about the Velvet Room later when this is over.
[She cuts off the feed, looking discouraged. Some memories were better kept secret.]

Saori?

Uh...hi, Gaignun. Sorry you had to see that...especially the third one.

After seeing that last one, I do feel horrible though. I'm horrible as a girlfriend. I had Kaiji before I went back and yet I decided to go ahead to say 'yeah, I'm okay with marrying another guy'. It's probably selfish for me to say I'm glad Kaiji's not here now.

[She feels some tears welling up and wipes them away.]
I'm not proud of that third memory in anyway. I don't even know how I'm hanging on. It's a miracle I haven't snapped yet.
