38: Can't save everyone [Video]

[The feed starts with Saori in the upstairs base in her shop just at the end of the Dark Hour. She's sitting on the floor and her eyes are bloodshot but not from a battle. Her voice is hoarse. ]

I'm sorry.

I-I didn't get to Issei in time. I know saying apologizing like this isn't going to change things and he will come back but...

He died last night from his wounds. My healing spells weren't enough. I couldn't save him...

The shop is going to be closed today. I'm sorry for the sudden decision. And for now I want everyone to have someone with them if they do want to go to the Dark Hour. We can't afford to lose any more people.

... I'm sorry.

Saori? [Now he's worried about you more then anyone here. They might not have talked much lately, but he still considers her his 'sister'. He also knows that 'I couldn't save them' feeling too well.]

You shouldn't be by yourself either right now.

... You're right but I'm gonna stay here. I think used all magic trying to keep him alive so I'm a little tired.

[She drops the phone and lies down on the floor, the fatigue and trauma sinking in. Why did Issei have to be the same age as her own brother she lost?]

That's fine. Just let me in when I get there alright? [He will keep her company come hell or high water.]

[~~Saori's condition changed to 'tired'~~ The video just shows the ceiling of the place but don't worry she's just asleep and the doors are open.]

[~~oh no! Hope she isn't sick tomorrow~~ Boy is he relieved to find out that she's just asleep and not like, passed out due to other things.]

Hey...Saori. [He'll just nudge her gently] You shouldn't sleep on the floor.

[~~Chances are she will be.~~ She's like the sleeping dead so she won't wake up anytime soon.]

[Fine, he's going to scout out a couch or a bed or something to haul her up onto. Directly on the floor sleeping is bad for the back]

[A couch is currently occupied by Issei's body. There is another one though thankfully. ]

[Even being stuck in a human body instead of his extra strong URTV one, Gaignun is still strong enough to lift Saori gently on to the couch. Now, to find a blanket or something.]

[Yep Saori is still out but curls up when she's placed on the sofa. Seriously, best big brother.]

[Someone has to take care of her. So, blanket acquired, and an extra pillow. Now to grab himself a cookie so that he can settle in and make sure nothing else happens to her while she sleeps.]

[Hope you're comfortable because she doesn't wake up until two hours later. She's still a little dazed but see Gaignun there and sits up.]

H-how long was I...?

[Gaignun smiled and shook his head.] Not long. [this is a bit of a lie but he doesn't want to worry her.]

You need to go to bed, and properly this time.

[Her vision is still a little blurry and she rubs her eyes.]

Y-yeah...I have to get ready for the impostor I need to deal with sooner or later. Looks like I'll have to cut back on the shop hours for a bit until they're all gone.

While I agree with you cutting back shop hours, you can wait to prepare for a few more hours until you get some actual rest, Saori.

[He is firm on this point.]

[She sheepishly laughs since she gets the hint.]

Well, um, yes, I was planning on sleeping some time along the line.

That sometime had better be now.

Alright, alright but I think it'll be better if I sleep at back at the hotel. Plus there's the matter of Issei's body. I don't think keeping him here is a good idea. Last thing I need is a local person snooping about here.

Not to mention certain, other, unpleasant things. I'll walk you back to the hotel, and then I'll take care of the body. At least he'll come back in a week.

Thank you but...do I even want to know you even know how to take care of a body?

[Gaignun has the distinct feeling that Saori didn't see his memories that time Prospero dragged them out. He can't decided whether he's relieved, or worried that she now thinks he's the sketchiest sketchasaur this side of the universe.]

[More like she doesn't want to bring up those memories since they weren't brought up with his permission. Plus even though she was a god, she had no right to judge him for his past. She values him for the present if that makes any sense.]

No, don't be stupid. We don't even know for sure if the person who attacked Issei is actually that person. I feel like we need to find out the truth before we jump into something this reckless.

All I know--all I care about right now--is that something is going on again. My own brother tried to kill me tonight, and if anyone thinks I am going to just stand by and do nothing while this transpires, they're wrong.

I understand but we need to know what we're getting ourselves into. So your friend attacked you and the same happened to Issei as well. Hold on a second. What was your friend's name?

...Oscar. He was another of the Fianna, so if you see anyone wearing armor similar to mine...you should be careful.

[She shuts off the video as she goes through her contacts list. That's odd... She turns the video back on.]

Diarmuid, his name isn't in our contact list. So that would mean that Oscar you met might not be the real deal.

Then the city's doing something strange. Oscar wouldn't attack me even if his life were to depend on it--either he was being controlled or as you say, it is not even him to begin with.

I don't know how, but...whatever happened to Issei must have been something similar.

Somehow I'm not surprised this place would off something of this sort. All the more reason the buddy system would be advised. We need to remind each other they are not who they look like. And we need to spread the word about this.

That means... There's a shadow out there who might look like... I'll have to go out and find them tomorrow.

[She frowns at the thought of meeting that shadow imposter. When she had her powers, she was equal in strength to her husband. That wasn't the case here though.]

I would advise you to be careful. I know it's hard, but...attacking them first may be the safest course of action.

I could say the same to you. If the shadow takes on the form I think it'll take, I need to be extra cautious.

You should get some rest too. You look like you're about to faint.

[She laughs weakly because who thought spamming healing spells tire out yourself. .]

An event of this nature...casualties shouldn't be a surprise. Go get some rest, you'll be in no condition to prevent more of them if you let this break your resolve.

*The truth is, he's kind of shaken by Issei's death too. He respected the guy, and truth be told, he's a bit soft to completely brush off the death of allies he knows personally. But he's also stubborn enough to be able to hide it unless you know him well.*

Still...I was so close. I don't understand, I used up all of strength to heal him but maybe it wasn't enough. This didn't really break any of my resolve, honestly. Guess it's more frustration than anything else.

[Even after losing her father, brother and who knows how many souls that died while she was on the job, losing someone here still managed to hit home sometimes.]

It's understandable to be frustrated by a failure, just so long as you don't let it move you to do anything foolish.

I know. After twenty years plus of fighting supernatural creatures, I know better than to make such a mistake. I'm gonna get some rest soon and plan out a few things.

Be sure someone is out there with you. Promise me that at least. Last thing I want to see is you getting killed too. I know from experience death isn't permanent but it's never easy.

I faced a Shadow already, so hopefully they'll leave me alone from now on. I mean, I know I can kill him again if I have to, but...

[Her voice becomes flat.] Frankly, I don't think I could just limit myself to one bullet the next time.

[...Wow, Hiyono. You may have just made Saori a little afraid of you.]

I'm pretty sure they'll leave you alone for sure. Of course, you can call me if you need back up.

[This is probably the angriest she's been in Prospero, and she's having a hard time containing it. Still, she immediately switches back to one of her usual sugary smiles.]

[People back home including her own husband have mentioned how she's scary when she goes from angry to smiling in .5 seconds. Now it's kinda weird to see happen to her.]

Y-yeah same here.

I'm serious! I don't want to see anymore people die. Even if we come back, that's no excuse for being too reckless and losing your life in the process.
