Unit 1 - Video

[The video clicks on, showing a black haired man with a very mild look of bewilderment on his face. Not as much as one might expect from a total newbie, but by this point he's a tad used to waking up in strange places. Thanks Dad. Though really, this doesn't look like what he expected the afterlife to be. He really doesn't feel dead though so he's guessing he's alive.]

Oh so that button is the same...[Oh. Right. Broadcasting. He clears his throat]

I suppose I should go out on a limb and assume that this was not where I was supposed to end up. For one thing, I've been to most of the planets that like to emulate Lost Jerusalem and this does not look at all familiar. Would someone be kind enough to tell me what is going on here? Or at least where this place is? I have to admit I am a little lost.

That'd make two of us. Prospero's kind of a windfall in that regard, too.

Might as well go with Prospero itself, first. Stuff more immediately useful to know. Any questions in particular come to mind before I start spouting out generalities?

Directions would be nice. This place is somewhat different then to what I'm used to.

We don't have a map yet? Maybe I should talk to our database-master about that.

Well, as far as the island itself is concerned, there's three major areas. The largest covers most of the southern and western parts of Prospero - mostly it's run-down buildings, but there are a few businesses around as well. The eastern side's fairly populated, and mainly stores and the like. Lastly the northern part of the island is private homes and other living areas.

Probably the most noteworthy place is the Bayview hotel. People who've just got here can stay there for free - most of the people on this network who aren't kids are there, myself included.

[And she'll squint at the screen, looking beyond Gaignun for a few moments before shrugging.]

Can't tell if you're there or not. It's more or less in the middle of all three sections, where they all meet.

[A pause, and a sheepish expression.] Hope that was the kind of "directions" you'd meant.

[There is a pause as he looks up] I'm actually right near the hotel. I'm glad to hear it is at least fairly accommodating.

[He chuckles a bit at her expression.] Yes, that is actually what I meant.

[She laughs, lightly.] Glad you're not obtuse like some people.

But, yes. The Hotel's kinda important; at least until you get your own place, if that's what you want. It doesn't pay for everything, but they give you free room, at least.

Well, I try. Yes, looking for work. That's going to be an interesting experience. [He was practically handed his riches at home. Starting that empire up again is going to be a challenge.]

I know what ya mean. [Because what is having a, uh, very stable job?] Still, it's not all that bad. It's even an interesting perspective shift; heck, all of this is.

I suppose not. [He has to laugh again] I suppose this will be good for me.

Perspective, my good man! Look at it positively, and it won't be bad at all. That's life in general, right?

Hah, I suppose you're right there Devola. If you don't have your happiness, you don't have very much.

It's logic that works pretty good, I've found.

Hmm, back to your question... There's a few places around town that are noteworthy, but nothing that seems really pressing to know about, I suppose.

I guess I have some exploring to do tomorrow then. That seems like the best way to go about it. Any places I should avoid?

Avoid? No, nothing really comes to mind. The town's pretty safe twenty-four outta twenty-five times. I guess one of the positive points about all the abandoned and unpopulated areas is that they're not full of unsavory individuals.

I see. Well, that's good to know. Thank you for all your assistance Devola, I should probably let you go.

Sure. M'glad I could help. Tell me when you're settled in and we can bug each other about our respective homes for a bit.

[He chuckles] Of course. You've certainly gotten me quite curious.

That makes two of us! Or, I guess you stoked the flames of curiosity up again? Something like that. I'm rambling. I'll leave you be now, sorry 'bout that.

Quite alright. A healthy dose of curiosity is hardly ever detrimental.

Well, there is that saying about what it does to felines. Then again, to abuse the metaphor, cats have extra lives, so I'm not worried.

It's not even if as if they need those lives most of the time, as they land on their feet if it is at all possible.

Hm. Wouldn't know! Most of the cats I've seen are too busy napping to fall from great heights.

They do that, don't they. But that's just the way they are I suppose.

Mm, must be nice. Not that I've got a hard life myself, but when the only problem you've got in the day is those pesky sunbeams trying to escape you... Well. Like I said, must be nice.

Don't forget the occasional mouse to catch. Even the most housebound of cats still know how to do that.

I think that's just because they like to chase around stuff smaller than they are. Bugs, mice, particularly long blades of grass. Really, anything as long as they've got the size advantage.
