♚ the year of the dragon
☙VIDEO;
G'evening, fellow captives of Prospero. [ Saber pauses briefly to consider her words, before her face scrunches up in displeasure. ] There must be a kinder term to refer to the community as a whole. Regardless, I have read many traditions on how others celebrate the coming of the new year and have tried to adapt best I can. Might I inquire as to how you celebrate such an occasion back home?
[ There's another pause as she reflects on just what she's done. Allowing a certain someone to have a clean slate. Such a trial was difficult, yet her word was given not only as a knight but as a king. ]
Disorganization has also been rampant in the past year, so I have taken it upon myself to ensure that we act more responsibly as a group. Those who are injured should report in so that we can watch over them. It appears these shadows care little for being fair and I will not witness further blood spill. Children who cannot fight should also speak up now so that we can assign proper guardians and combat teachers. In fact, if it is not terribly bold of me to ask it, might I start a list of roles that individuals are willing to uphold? Unless there is another who has started one - in that case, I request you speak with me.
Thank you for your time. May your captivity be as pleasant as you can make it.
[video] I have too much fun dropping that line in her tags
[ Just to think, all he had to do was introduce himself and ultimately she would follow suit. Ultimately though, if he had spoken with Diarmuid, then surely her name was to be revealed. That and there was a heavy truth with his words - if he were to ask for Saber, how many would answer to that name? ]
Very well then. My name is Arturia Pendragon although there are those who will still refer to me as Arthur. [ Feeling little need to go in depth about her title and history, she'll continue on. ] As for my resources, do you think me short of knights? Even still, my brothers are fit to defend all with ease. There is no challenge too great for the Knights of the Round and I will not assign them to tasks that others can take up.
[ For example... talking like this. Boy, she can easily ask someone else to do that. ]
[When Arturia introduces herself, Edgeworth sets the camera down and steps back to bow to it.] Miles Edgeworth. [He then immediately crosses his arms.] If your numbers are so vast, then why did you allow that recent disaster of an assault on the so-called "dungeon" by ill-equipped children to occur?
You raise a valid point, Miles. [ Immediately she drops to first name basis without any disregard to his personal preference. ] Children will be children though and what was there we could do? Ask them not to act so foolishly? No, all we can do is educate them on being able to defend themselves.
[video] Keywords are relevant.
The desire to contribute to the safety of the children under these circumstances is one of many reasons which contribute to my own decision to take up a weapon. I'd be foolish to think that I could match a knight, but I would rather that my very presence didn't needlessly complicate a battle, whatever the cause for it might be.
[video] Don't remind me that I've yet to keyword all of mine.. :(
[ Sorry Edgeworth, but Saber doesn't work that way. Even when polite, she'll still continue to use a first name basis. That's just the way she is. A stubborn king will always be a stubborn king. ]
Does a knight not start their journey the moment they pick up a weapon? Skill will come naturally to those who long to defend and to stand on their own two feet.

There is still a manner in which you can display your skill. Not one person's abilities should ever be dismissed due to a possible lack of need for them. No, your place here will be discovered soon enough. You must rely on others to guide you to the proper place is all.
The courts.. I was not aware such a thing existed here. Does that mean the ruler of this place holds a strong presence or do you reside in a lesser court?
I don't refer to court in the royal sense that you must be used to. I refer to a court of law, a place of tribunals. Specifically, it is my job to present the case against those accused of crimes and challenge the cases of those who defend the accused.
No, it is too confusing as is. Allowing others to provide aid for the criminal is unfit and then you wish to involve others to fight against such aid?
[ This is why having one dude in charge is a good thing. ]
[video] Oh NO, what have you done?
You may have failed to notice this, Ms. Pendragon, but it is a simple fact that the age of kings is over! What few remain in civilized regions are mere accessories. Mankind is entrusted with its own fate to as great a degree as is feasible, choosing groups of leaders and a leader among them rather than relying on the concept of might making right or on superstitious notions of family lines chosen by divine forces. In this way, those leaders who will not act in the people's interests will be prevented from acting at all, whether through losing the next election or by being obstructed by those who see more clearly. Absolute rulership can far more easily lead to tragedy or tyranny than democracy can.
As for why the world has changed in such a way, it is simply this -- every human being is capable of error and bias, including the privileged and the ambitious! Most of mankind has come to an understanding that truth is not something that is handed down from on high -- whether by leaders or by religious structures -- but something that must be struggled for through evidence and the application of multiple viewpoints from fine minds! Only through such means can we humans come to tell our follies from our genius and truly grasp the facts of any matter. Indeed, rather than simply accepting the words of any ancient book as the entirety of the workings of the world, many of mankind's best and brightest struggle to ascertain the physical truths of the very universe and climb ever closer to the truth every year! What problems today's world has, it ultimately has due to ignorance, whether willful or accidental!
These realizations extend to the way in which criminal law is handled. Accusations can be mistaken and crimes can be something other than what they appear to be -- I've seen such things happen time and again. That is why court exists. To punish the innocent or allow the guilty to cause more suffering is reprehensible, and it is not beyond mankind's ability to discern the truths of the earthly realm! It would be irresponsible to not allow each and every defendant a fair trial -- to do anything less is to presume one's own omniscience. It is for this reason that we prosecutors argue against the defendant, defense attorneys argue in favor of the accused, and a judge acts to mediate and decide the outcome! Police are only human, as are lawyers; only together, through scrutiny of hard evidence and testimony with logic, have we any hope of grasping the truth beyond the shadow of a doubt.
Really, Ms. Pendragon, I'm disappointed in you. Of all the former Servants here, I would have thought you to be the one most able to expand your viewpoint beyond that of your era, given that your legend paints you as unusually progressive for your day. I can understand why Gilgamesh behaves as he does, but from you I expected far better, and Diarmuid insisted that I ought to have high expectations for you as well. I should hope that I do not learn at some later date that in truth you've been burning female pharmacists as witches simply for plying a trade that you fail to understand.
[video] wow you broke my arthurian logic for a few days there. also i love this thread.
For example, a simple walk down the street gave her all that she needed to judge this place. Britain wasn't without it's fair share of beggars and thieves, but they kept to the shadows. Rarely did they ever show their face, for when they did, they were captured. ]
No. [ It resounds out where she currently resides that it leaves the device in her hand to static just a bit, the crinkling noise almost disrupting her thoughts. ] Allow me to start from the beginning. For when kings ruled the world, there was someone for humankind to look up to for guidance. While many of us place our faith in holy wars and God above, humans falter when they cannot witness such acts for themselves with their own two eyes. A king is a beacon of hope in which they can rely on and without that, what do I see? Councils upon councils of men trying to fill roles that are spread too thin.
[ Taking in a deep breath, she struggles to maintain her cool composure. ]
You may think me uneducated or lacking in enlightenment, but I assure you my stay here in Prospero has been spent well. I choose to work where I do so that I can witness as many acts of humanity as I can. Books upon books lay at my fingertips in the store and I see how the rich dine, only to follow it up with how the common folk dine. You speak of things that have always been well known. A man is capable of making the choice to commit a crime and man is capable of making mistakes. Arguably so, there are many more men in this world than there was during the time of my rule, yet there remains not enough responsible for them. The stocks of this world are full and crime remains rampant. Have you forgotten about the murders that have taken place here? Do you expect me to lay in wait for your silly concept of courts and defenses for my murderer to receive justice? [ A scoff. ] No, for I have already forgiven her of her wrong-doing and if I failed to do so, then I am no better than she. For she will remain bound by her hatred and that is a crueler punishment than any this supposed police force can inflict.
[ But the thing that was the most important was.. ]
No matter. In the end, modern society has decided to burden everyone else with these problems instead of a single person. I do not know when the decision was made to do away with kings and emperors, nor when they decided to assign the role to hundreds of people instead of a few individuals. The church may have been corrupt, the king's knights may have been wrong, but above all else, there was only one thing that mattered.
I shall tell you that one thing right now, Miles, so that you may understand how frustrating this is for me as a fallen leader. For it is my failure as a king that people are inflicted with the mental torment of spilt blood upon their hands. It may be your right to choose this path, but the burden should only belong to one. Yes.. Only one should have the hands of the guilty and innocent on their hands. I may have sent innocent men to the stocks. I may have sent guilty men free to choose new victims. I may have been wrong and I may have been just. No matter any of that though, for it was my charge and my charge alone.
[ Calming down, she regains her solemn expression. ]
That is why I do not approve of the system these days. Suffering is too rampant and men can be driven to the edge of their own sanity if too much is inflicted upon them. As for your remark of wit regarding pharmacists, I find little wrong with them. I may not understand that which they do, but modern medicine has aided those I care for--[ Irisviel is the first she thinks of, but Maiya, Illyasviel, Rin, Shirou - all of them could have been killed without the assistance of modern medicine. ]--and serves no evil in this world.
