07 [Video + Action during the Dark Hour]

[Video]
[The feed flickers to an knocked out Saori lying down on a street, who looks rather beaten up with a bruise here and there. Strangely enough, the voice that comes on that sounds like her.]

Oh my. I was never really much of a fighter until I came here. Not to mention I've been so hesitant about fighting again. It's pathetic really. Looks like curiosity about these 'duplicate shadows' got the best of me. Oh don't worry, I wouldn't kill myself just yet. At least not until you admits I'm around.

[At the moment, the normal Saori cough and stirs awake. The phone's put down somewhere so now the Shadow that was holding it is right in standing front of her.]

W-what are you talking about?

You know very well what I mean. You are me after all. You're hesitant about things and always give up any chance of happiness for yourself. But for what? So you could be that saintly motherly person people could rely on? Fulfill obligations to your family? Like back in college when you studied abroad and your boyfriend proposed to you. You turned it down and you saw just how crushed he was.

I wasn't ready for such a heavy commitment and--

And you'll never be ready if you keep shooting down the opportunities that come to you! Hell, you won't even try to confessing your feeling to that guy!

S-shut up. You know nothing about me.

[At this point, Shadow Saori yanks her up and slams her into a wall before she could even summon her Persona for an attack. Just then, the feed cuts off.]

[Action, immediately after the video.]
Stop kidding yourself, Saori Nakagawa. It's time you admit to yourself that you can't always be the one everyone can rely on. You can't even save yourself, for crike's sake.

[The Shadow drops Saori, leaving her to slump against the wall and walks away. As she speaks, she doesn't look back.]

You still have time to accept you for who you are. I suggest you don't waste any more of it.

[A stupid question, maybe, but he wasn't exactly thinking straight. Though, the sudden hug surprised him, but after a moment, he held on to her.]

H-Hey, it's... Um, I'm gonna help ya, okay? [Or so he was hoping to.]

You ran all over the place to find me? Thank you.

[While the two share a quiet moment, the Shadow Saori crept her way back, behind Kaiji. Turns out she was only waiting in an nearby alley to ambush whoever saved her. She shoves Saori off and wraps her arms around his shoulders and giggles.]

Why, Kaiji, that's awfully sweet of you. I think this calls for another dinner on me, don't you think?

[Kaiji turns to shove her off in return, pinning the doppleganger with a surprisingly strong arm to the wall. He tries to stay in between Saori and her Shadow.]

I don't know what the deal is with all you creepy evil twins lately, but I've had enough of this shit already.

[The Shadow laughs, though she was genuinely surprised from the action. If it wasn't for Kaiji holding her down, the two would've gone at each others throats again.]

Oh but we've only just begun, Kaiji. After all, you haven't met yours yet, am I right? Unless everyone accepts that we are you, we'll be here for a while. I'm just surprised you actually came to find me. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting anyone to find me.

W-what?

I mean think about it, why save someone who has little to no fighting experience when there are plenty fighters out there? It'd save everyone's time and effort, and I wouldn't feel like I'm holding someone back. Everyone knows that's the real reason why I let myself get killed during the zombie event.

That's bullshit. No one here would just let themselves die, and that includes Saori! We're trying to live normal lives without shit like this happening. Not all of us can be ancient heroes or whatever the hell they are, but so what!

[Still trying to stay between the two, Kaiji makes a quick move to try and grab his dropped bat.]

[Being much quicker, Shadow!Saori manages to kick the out of reach, so the only way to reach it was to let go of her.]

But would you blame me for letting myself die when it seems everyone close to you goes away forever or dies? The police weren't of any help in searching and my father and little brother are presumed dead. I still wonder what I did to deserve this. Did I go wrong somewhere with taking care of my brother? Or was it because I was envious of the fact Akira could do whatever he wanted to do? I can't even think about going beyond just friends with people only because I'm afraid I'll lose them again.

[Saori in the meantime, doesn't say a word. Was what the shadow saying true? There had been times when she felt resentment towards her brother since he was the one who was able to go out and do what he wanted while she stayed back to provide for their apartment.]

[The news was a little disturbing, but Kaiji figured the shadow was lying. However, Saori's silence was a little distressing.]

Saori, just... Don't listen to it, okay?

[In the moment Kaiji turned his attention to Saori, the shadow pushed him off of her, grabbed his wrist to restrain him, and now their roles had switched.]

You can't always be the saint everyone looks up to, me. Bottling up your problems will solve nothing. And if you're not going to do anything concerning him...maybe I'll have him myself.

[For a second, there was genuine fear in her eyes. That was the final straw for her. Without a warning, Saori moved in and clocked her Shadow in the jaw. The Shadow staggered back and let go of Kaiji, clearly surprised.]

Keep your hands of my man! I won't lose any more people I care about like this anymore. I want to get stronger so I can protect them in anyway I can.

[It takes Kaiji a moment to react to that surprising punch. After a second he scrambles for his bat. After he does, it dawns on him what Saori just said, too. Did she just call him...?

PRIORITIES, ITO. PRIORITIES. He's wondering if hitting the shadow with the bat and a few lighting spells would be enough to take care of it.]

[Saori didn't even realize what she just said. She iss more focused on getting things straight with her Shadow. In the mean time, the Shadow shook off the hit and just laughs. Even though she physically looks like Saori, she's much quicker and stronger, pining her to the ground. Her hands wrap around her neck.]

You think you can protect and save them? Don't make me laugh. You can't even take care of yourself. You won't even acknowledge me! This whole time after Akira died, you weren't alive. You only went on living through the motions. Don't you remember feeling alive when you studied abroad? That brief moment of freedom? You can have it again but you need to stop holding yourself back!

[Saori coughs from getting suddenly winded. Strangely enough, the hands on her neck, they didn't feel like they were strangling her. The grip isn't tight to where she was choking. Weaponless, the only choice available was to summon Brigid.]

Fool, you know using Brigid on me won't do you much good. Both of us have some resistance to fire. Still I got a feeling it might hurt you more than me at this close range.

[Speaking of Persona, the Shadow summons her, an identical copy of Saori's.
Saori shut her eyes, bracing herself for the attack.]

[Not if Kaiji has anything to do with it. With the shadow focusing on Saori, he took his chance, sprung forward and clocked it across the back of the head with the aluminum bat. Hopefully it was in time to stop the fire spell she was about to cast.]

[It's enough to stop the magic from hitting Saori and lets go of her neck for her hands to clasp the back of her own head in pain. The Shadow snarls at him, focusing her second attack at him.]

Don't even think about it!

[She shoves the Shadow off of her and gets up, standing by Kaiji's side.]

Acknowledge you...? After what you just did to me? You must be joking.

You can't always say and pretend that you're alright. Our family would've wanted us to not to mourn forever and instead live out the lives they can't have now. So if you're not going to fulfill their wish, I'll do it for you!

[Kaiji still brandished the bat threateningly at the shadow, but spoke to Saori.]

What the fuck is with these things? They're damned disgusting. I just want it to shut up already.

It's....me. Or a better term would be the part of me I always hid from others. I think I understand now.

[Saori carefully walks up to her shadow, who tenses and steps back. The original holds the other's hands and rests her forehead against hers.]

I'm sorry, me, for neglecting us. It must've been hard to keep those problems hidden. I promise I won't do it again. I won't shoulder everything by myself. I've got some wonderful people to rely on and I'll protect them in any way I can.

[The Shadow is shocked at first but smiles, tears in her eyes. She slowly begins to fade away until she's gone. Saori turns around, her own eyes tearing up.]

These copies of us, Kaiji, are manifestations of the truths we don't want to admit to ourselves. Unless we learn to accept they are true to an extent, they'll be sticking around for a while.

[Kaiji lowers the bat, overwhelmed by all of this. If that was true, then all the stuff the shadow said...]

They are...? I... H-Hey, are you okay?

Yeah...Somehow I feel relieved dealing with that. Don't want to sound cliche but it feels like a heavy weight's off my back now.

[She wipes the tears out of her eyes.]

I'm sorry you had to witness all of that, Kaiji. Thank you for staying here this whole time.

N-No, it's... Whatever the hell is going on around here, we're all apart of it. If that's how you take care of these things, we gotta let everyone know.

Um, don't worry about it. So long as you're okay. C'mon, let's get back inside before we get the attention of any other shadows out here.

It's one thing for us to know how to defeat them. Whether or not people can accept them is a different story.

[There's a bit of blush on her cheeks from hearing that last part, but she smiles.]

Y-yeah. I didn't use too much magic against my Shadow but I am getting a bit tired.

Enough of that for one night, if you ask me. I need a drink after that, you too I'd guess.

I think tonight does deserve a drink or two. I'm off tomorrow so there's no harm in a little self-indulgence. Let's head back to the hotel unless you know another place we can hide in.

The hotel's the safest place to go at this point. C'mon. [He manages a bit of a smile at her.]

[Saori follows, walking right next to him.]

Shouldn't be too much of a problem to get some drinks. I know where they keep the good stuff. At the rate I keep using their kitchen, I might end up on their staff part time.

Awesome. Your food's great, so they really should hire ya.

[Except... Except there was something on his mind. Something Saori said. After a few moments of looking like he obviously wants to say something, he just finally blurts it out.]

Um. So, you told that shadow that I was, uh, "your man".

They're gonna have to compete with the high school I'm working for then. But I suppose I could juggle between the two if I tried hard enough.

What?

I SAID WHAT?!

[Her face turns bright red from the news, covers her face and turns around. Give her some time and she calms down. Well no point in hiding it since she just promised her own shadow to be more honest with herself. The blush is still there.]

I was going to tell you eventually...Kaiji, I....like you.

[She's just ready to crawl into the nearest hole and hide there forever.]

Y-Yeah, you did, but it was when you were about to punch it a-and you were all riled up so--

Oh, so...

[OK get your act together, Ito, stop acting like high school kids, you're 23 for god's sake!

Well it's not like this really happens to him often, at least.]

Seriously? Cuz that's... cool. I-I mean, I, uh, like... you, too.

[Of course it's more awkward for her because in her 27 years, she's only dated once.]

In that case, if it's alright with you maybe we could, you know...

[He nods, smiling now.] Yeah. Sounds great. So let's get this thing solved.

This time, it's a date for sure. We can start from tomorrow, but time to rest up.

[She holds onto Kaiji's hand and leads the way back to the hotel.]
