[The following message is accompanied by a close-up image of a pair of round silver cufflinks with this design etched into them. They're apparently pinned to the end of a burgundy sleeve, and are small enough to make it unlikely that the design was hand-carved.]

While I can appreciate the craftsmanship of these cufflinks, I don't recall owning a pair like these. I have as little idea concerning how they came to be pinned to my suit as I do of how I came to be on this unfamiliar island. If anyone has seen a pair of silver cufflinks studded with a pair of half-carat garnets each or can shed light onto the origins of this pair, I would appreciate the lead.

...Essentially, the investigation and subsequent arrest of a suspect in a crime is only the beginning. The accused is then brought to court, where a prosecutor explains the evidence against the suspect while a defense attorney attempts to discredit the case, all under the supervision of a judge. Witnesses to the crime or to related circumstances are brought in and... questioned by the two lawyers in the process. In this way, a criminal's guilt can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, while those falsely accused can escape wrongful punishment.

That I could encounter a man who has not would seem to lend credence to the idea that... that time itself is no barrier to the kidnappers. At the least, you don't appear to hail from Africa or anywhere similarly backward and oppressed.

Is it? I hadn't given it much thought--then again, I am not certain how we're all speaking the same language to begin with.

It was 2019 -- March 18th, to be precise.

That's one I've not heard before. I came here from the winter of 1994...though considering that was a bit of a temporal mess as well I'm not sure if that counts for much.

To be ignorant of the existence of court as an Irishman, one would have to be from at least several hundred years in the past, before the printing press and widespread literacy made it feasible for the common man to understand the workings of his own government.

...Try a couple thousand. 'Medieval' is the term for it, I believe.

I was the first knight of the Fianna led by Fionn mac Cumhaill. As for what on earth I was doing in 1994, that's a story in and of itself that would take far too long to recount.
