[ Accidental Video ]

[ You would figure by now, somebody would notice how easy it was to accidentally set these phones off and make them start recording and maybe, you know, fix them. Because it's happened again. But this time it's not some secret affair or helpless person experiencing shadows for the first time. What you see unfolding on the screen looks like a teenager trying to pick a fight with kids a little younger than himself. Wow, what? That hardly seems fair! ]

The hell do you punks think you're doing? Get out of here! Scram!

[ ...Yet amazingly, all it took was a few swings and punches at the air to scare the kids away. Of course, doing so reveals another child curled up on the ground, hugging a plush bunny to her chest. Of course, the big and scary teenager makes his way over to her, but with a much different aura about him this time. He actually kneels down to her level and gives her head a pat. ]

You okay, kid? ...Damn it, they really did a number on him, didn't they? Here, lemme see him.

[ Yes, he just whipped out some thread and a needle. And he is totally sewing the bunny back up like nobody's business. Obviously he must be a pro at this. Eventually he's done and hands it back to the kid who gives her thanks and scampers off. ]

Geez, kids can be so cruel. Ain't fair, being ganged up on like that. Now where did I put-- shit!

[ Yeah, he may have just realized the phone someone got knocked out of his pocket and is totally recording everything. Panic mode is go!]

[ Oh, looks like he finally got it! Click. Of course, it's not like that's going to keep anyone from calling him back or anything. ]

[ Later on, you might find Kanji wandering about the city. Doesn't look like he's actually doing anything in particular, but if you hadn't seen his earlier accidental video, he might look like the type that's looking for trouble. I mean, those piercings and that scar don't exactly give the best first impressions. Feel like bothering him? ]

[Today is unusually warm for early December, so that new long coat Edgeworth bought the other day is sitting in his hotel room in favor of his suit alone. Furthermore, he's run into some walls in his early investigations and that job application is still being processed, so right now he's taking a break by window-shopping at a music store. More specifically, the prosecutor is taking notes about a display of flutes.]

[ Kanji just so happened to be passing by the store when something caught his eye. It was more so the suit than the man in question, oddly enough. An expertly sewn burgundy suit, obviously made of the finest materials available. And that cravat... Just who was this guy? He wouldn't think anyone would just casually walk around in such expensive attire, so he was probably easily impressed. More so considering how easy it was for the untrained eye to mistake that burgundy with a darker shade of pink. Feel free to catch the boy awkwardly staring at him. ]

[And catch he does. Why an apparent punk would be staring at him with something that looked more like awe than avarice clearly puzzles this grey-haired man. Rather than showing vulnerability for long, however, Edgeworth pockets his pen and organizer, turns to the teenager, and crosses his arms, tapping a finger on one of them impatiently.]

[ ...It always happens like this. Getting asked a simple question because you got caught staring, tripping all over yourself because you can't think of an answer that doesn't expose your ~SECRET~, and being seen as even weirder than usual. Oh, the life of a suffering sewer. ]

Keeping oneself presentable is always a worthwhile effort. [Judgmental, steely eyes roam up and down the teenager's outfit.]

Yeah, well some of us can't afford to throw our money away on the latest threads. Got more important things to do, like feedin' the family.

[ ...wow it feels awkward doing this to someone you actually sort of admire. ]

[Edgeworth never was a candidate for sensitivity awards.]

Then I would suggest that you focus on your own employment, at least until such time as you can afford an outfit that won't cause you to be thrown out of an interview for a better job.

[ He can barely commit to going to school. Him committing himself to a job would be... well, it would prove to be an amusing experience. ]

If only you got paid for suffering through the joke that's called an education system.

If school is failing to do its job sufficiently, then it's your responsibility to invest time in obtaining a better educational experience, whether through apprenticeship, tutoring, or simply making proper use of the library and Internet. Or do you wish to spend your entire life struggling to feed your family and gaping in awe at those more diligent than you?

Easy to say when you don't live in the middle of nowhere. And it's not like I can exactly move either. Hell, I can't even make it off this damn island right now.

You'll find that the latter problem is shared by dozens of people here. Even those who claim to hail from times similar to this one have found that familiar phone numbers fail to reach those that they ought to.

[ Oh boy. That's probably not the best thing for him to realize right now. Considering past happenings with his father, he's going to be worried sick about her. And when he's worried? He does stupid things. Well, things that are stupider than usual for him. ]

[ ...Okay, no. He shouldn't be openly saying this shit. He's just going to shut up right now. ]

If I had that answer or an unhindered path towards it, I would hardly be wasting time contemplating the purchase of a new flute. [A pause, then a less-firm afterthought:] ...I'm sorry.

[ A sigh escapes his lips, posture gaining a bit less confidence than it had seemed to boast before. But he'll keep a straight face, regardless. ]

Ain't got no reason to be. Probably my own damn fault. All I've been doing to causing trouble for everyone.

Unless you are the one responsible for the mass kidnappings, that is highly unlikely.

[ Wait, wasn't there something related to kidnappings back in Inaba? He couldn't really recall any of the details, but it seemed... weird to say the least. ]

Huh. Seems kinda weird that they'd bother tossing in a punk like me from some town of minor significance though, doesn't it? I mean, you're a big fancy lawyer so I can get why you're here.

That it would, were the motivation to ransom. However, several things are out of place for such a scenario, not the least of which is that no one is actively preventing us from traveling.

[This guy's glare now seems to be boring straight into Kanji.]

I highly doubt that a change in the formula of a typical kidnapping scenario as severe as this would be made merely to confuse us all. To restrain one's kidnappees to a cage, however gilded, is vital to any ordinary motive for the crime.

I don't think there's anything ordinary about any of this.

Clearly not. However, I refuse to believe that there isn't some form of reason to all of this, even should that reason prove entirely alien.

...Don't tell me you actually buy into that 'monster' non-sense people keep trying to warn me about.

[Being the recipient of a glare himself prompts Edgeworth to try to bury his new surge of unease under a sterner return glare.]

...I didn't wish to believe it either, not even when my own eyes were the messengers.
