11: New Years clean up [action and audio]

[Action, forward dating to 12/29]

[Chances are if someone is on the first floor, they might notice one of the rooms is open. There's several items, including books, tins of tea and other trinkets left outside. They might even hear someone humming a certain song. Turns out it was Saori this whole time, cleaning her room. It's really not much of a mess inside, but she wants to make sure everything's properly cleaned before the new year.]

Now, I know I can arrange my bookshelf much better than this...Maybe I can organize it by...ah, no that's not going to work.

This is more geared towards those who're going to the high school but I could use the feedback. Since I'm work at the cafeteria, I'm just wondering if you guys have any ideas for stuff we could serve up for variety. And of course, if you guys find me in the hotel kitchen, I'm happy to take requests.

[ She gathers the tea he measure into a pot and pours some of hot water inside. All that's left is to let it brew.]

Actually I should apologize for leaving the conversation like that. It was because of me, things got awkward and I thought letting it end there was the best option. I'm sorry if that must have confused you.

Were our positions reversed, I suspect that I would have been equally at a loss. In light of that, forgiveness seems appropriate.

[A short time later, the tea's done brewing and she pours some of it into a cup. After placing the cup on a saucer, she places it on the table in front of him along with the creamer.]

[Edgeworth takes a tiny sip before adding any cream, savors it thoughtfully, then adds cream in an amount proportionate to its strength.]

I don't believe that I sufficiently thanked you for your research yesterday.

[She pulls up a chair and sits across from Edgeworth. Hearing that her researched helped puts a smile on her face.]

You're very welcome.

It was no problem at all. I've been meaning to go back and do more reading on that sort of material for some time. Between balancing a day job, a boyfriend and the dark hour, it's sometimes tough to have the time to devote to my readings like how I did before arriving here.

Really? I, um, wouldn't know whether grimoires would be interesting reading, as I've had no reason to give anything involving the occult the slightest respect until recently.

[And he still doesn't sound comfortable with the idea, either.]

Well not just grimoires but just the books in my collection in general really. With more Personae being revealed and more Heroic Spirits, I just have to read up on all of them.

[And yes, that implies that huge stack of books just outside her door.]

Although the one book I miss the most isn't in this world.

Mythology is an interest that I can more easily relate to outside of this context, although it isn't one of my own. Even if it had been one, my mentor wouldn't have permitted its pursuit.

What book might that be?

[There's a pained smile on her face and she stares down at the table.]

My father's last project before he disappeared. A compilation of folklore he spent years recording, collecting and even translating. Actually, it never hit publication because he was still working on it at the time.

When I was back home, I made it my goal to finish the manuscript. Now that I'm here and also dead in my world, it will never be finished now.

[Edgeworth's not prone to direct eye contact that isn't a glare in the first place, but now? Now he seems to be actively avoiding looking at Saori's face at all.]

...I see. That... er, sounds like a terrible loss.

[The prosecutor's unease seems tinged with a hint of yesterday's overwhelming aura of melancholy.]

[Sensing that unease, she clenches her hands. After all that apologizing, they're back to being awkward with each other again.]

Sorry, I didn't mean to bring down the mood like that. Truth is, I'm used to dealing with loss but moving on and living life for them is the only thing I can do. I'm sure my family wanted me to do that.

[In the context his Shadow made him face, that otherwise everyday platitude sounds decidedly different...]

...Do you... have evidence of that?

[She sighs and ponders the question carefully. Her mind begins to sift through her memories. After a moment she speaks.]

That my family would've wanted me to live on? A year before my father disappeared, my mother died after being bedridden for so long. I asked him why did she have to die.

He told me, "Things happen for a reason, whether we want them to or not. We might not understand why right now, but in time it becomes clear. Your mother also told me she wants you and Akira to live out happy lives. Both of you will accomplish things both she and I can't."

[Edgeworth looks indirectly towards Saori -- better than looking away, at least -- and nods. That did suggest that one member of her family believed it, and another agreed enough not to qualify the message himself.]

At times, those reasons are terrible.
