[Ingrid's sitting in a small coffee shop, hands around a steaming mug. She's looking rather perkier than usual.]

It looks as though I've missed quite a few event this last week or so. I apologize, but it seems you younger folk weren't so bad at taking care of it. Even though two of you were kidnapped. [A pause as she sips her drink.] Are you two alright, by the way? I'd hate to hear two of my potential students are still shaken by the events.

Yes, students. It seems the local high school has given me a teaching position. I'm to take over a few science classes. I do hope to see many of you there. [Her tone implies that's more of an expectation than a hope.]

I'm also a little concerned that they allowed me the job considering my lack of credentials in this world. Have any of the rest of you encountered something like this yet?

One usually needs a college degree and a background check, among other things before getting a position in a school. [As an afterthought.] It's Mrs.

Force of habit, sorry. [Anyway, back to the main topic...] Gonna go out on a limb and guess that working at a school isn't the only place these, err, degrees, are needed.

As for the background checks. I guess having no background is as good as not having a bad one, here.

No. Generally any job in the professional realm requires a degree. Doctors, lawyers, buisness positions; it's a long list.

I suppose. But we don't exactly no where everyone here is from or what they've done before coming here.

[A small sigh.] Man am I getting sick of asking "what's that?" ...What's a degree? I guess it's some kind of accreditation? Proof-of-ability?

I'll admit, the mentality of "sure, why not?" has been doing me wonders for dealing with Prospero. Seeing it used by Prospero in regards to myself and others is making me rethink my stance some, though.

Yes, exactly that. You spend time studying whatever skill it is, and you get awarded a degree once you've mastered it well enough.

I'm afraid it isn't anything we can actively do anything about. Which is just as worrisome.

Pretty sensible thing to ask for from a hire. Really makes me wonder why they aren't asking for them now; did you talk to your boss about it at all?

You didn't have to in my day, but I do believe there is a degree for it now. How much it is needed, I don't know.

Ah well, I'll get over it. I mean, if we're doing bad at the jobs wouldn't the bosses of the respective places make note of it and react accordingly?

I would hope so! And I wouldn't put too much stock in the degree dear. They let me in without proof of one, I wager you'll find a similar situation.

Well, I'll be honest; I put more stock in seeing what someone can do in general, more than a piece of paper that says, "(name) can do this thing you want them to do!" Seems that Prospero's population has somewhat similar thoughts, so I'm not too worried.

Thanks! They said I was on something like a "trial period" for the moment... but like I said before, I'm not too worried.

I'd offer you the best of luck as well, but it sounds like you didn't need it, and probably won't need it in the long run either. Still, hope that teaching here isn't too rough.

I doubt it will be. I was used to teaching a much more, ah, energetic crowd. I daresay this will be breeze.

Pry all you like; it isn't secret information. [A wry smile.] I worked with meta-human children back home. You can imagine how much more peaceful it is to have a class that can't set you on fire at a thought.

[A pause and a thoughtful hum.] For that matter, is their schoolwork any different? Guess I could see "learn how to not-ignite-everything" classes, but what about the basics?

Some could. Some had more disastrous powers. Some had decidedly less so.

On top of learning how not to destroy everything, they received a perfectly well rounded education. I was teaching some of the basics myself.
